In order for us to get organized for this trip, who all will be going?

Mark and I (Rodney) got lucky and managed to reserve a cabin room at
the Iron Horse Lodge with two twin beds and we will be departing
Thursday morning and returning on Sunday. Anyone else from the group
going please post a reply to this thread (Sign up).

If you can't make reservations and need a place to sleep I don't have
a problem with you crashing on the floor. I think the Iron Horse Lodge
rents sleeping bags and mats real cheap. The only thing is we plan on
having hookers and stripers over after our daily rides so if you don't
mind a little partying...

Okay, back to business here... Lets decide on a meeting time and place
for Thursday morning. We should also talk about a route up there.
Please post your ideas and suggestions.

This is sure to be one awesome event, I am looking forward to it.

The Event:
When: 17-20 May, 2007

Where: Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge, Stecoah. NC

I vote for leaving early around 9 am and taking Hwy 64 west then take
the back country roads up to Stecoah.

I have not thought about a route yet. Initially I just assumed we
would take I-40 just to be expediate. Whats the advantage to the HWY
64 route?

64 just offers a little more scenery, I40 would be the quickest way.
I'm game for either way. I figured if we left around 9 am ish we'd
have plenty of time to get up there. I believe its around a 4 hour
ride via I40 and 5 hours via 64 but my time estimate may be off a
little. So if we left at 9 ish we'd get up there around 1 or 2 ish if
we took I40 and via 64 we'd arrive somewhere around 3 or 4. I looks
like most people will be arriving Thursday evening according to some
of the threads. Like I said it really doesn't matter to me, either
way is fine, 64 would be a little slower ride and we could pass
through a couple of small towns.

I plugged the route into google maps and mapquest, they're saying 5.5
hrs on I40 from my house. Now, the only time those numbers have been
accurate is when I was driving a truck with a governor (at least I
didn't have to watch out for the law!).

I followed the route zoomed in pretty closely and one thing jumped out
at me, the Blue Ridge Parkway. Zoom in so you get Lenoir in the East,
Boone in the north, and I26 in the west, you'll probably see what I
mean. This might work:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=UTF8&z=10&ll=35.985785,-81.956635&spn=0.618942,1.376038&om=1
That sure looks like a nice warm-up for the Tail of the Dragon. Has
anyone ridden out there? Hwy80 looks like a good way to get there,
take a look at where it meets up with the parkway, zoom in to 500ft
scale , now that's twisty.

64 crosses I40 in a bunch of places, so if we felt it was taking too
long, or we wanted to blow through bigger cities, that would be a good
out.

I typically ride the lesser roads, that may come from my cruiser
background, or that interstates can be boring. I'd probably be
inclined to take the interstate home though, so I can mow my lawn on
Sunday. :)

I was just wonderig what the differences were. I personally have been
to Boone once. I took 40. The scenic route is good for me. I am
betting that those time estimates are off big time though. When you
factor the slower pace and the mandatory stops, I would venture to
guess it will take the best part of the day. Not that I will be in any
hurry. What about a meeting place? Maybe around the Auto Mall in Cary?

Looks like Mark is our new Road Captain! :) Wow, my numbers
(guessing the travel time) were just estimates based on the last time
I went to Marion, NC which I know is a good scoot from where we'll be
going. I think Mark's route looks good. I would prefer to keep our
trip travel time (there) as quick as possible. I know, contradicting
myself here, I just didn't realize how long it would take. Again, I up
for any route. Looks like Mark has done his homework, if Mark doesn't
mind I vote for him to chose and lead the route. Coming back on
Sunday - I'm with you Mark. Lets just take I40 and get back in. I'm
up for meeting anyplace, I'm not familiar with Cary but I am somewhat
familiar with hwy 64 (the AutoMall). Yep, I too don't want to worry
about the law and will not be in any big hurry to get up there,
although it would be nice to get there before dark.

OK, so we'll take time out for the twisty-bits, and otherwise just hustle. The end of the trip looks like some nice non-highway roads to decompress. I'll see if I can get some estimate of trip time as I would like to get there before dark, if not dinner.

I completely forgot that I have something going on Sunday afternoon, I'm not sure what everyone else had in mind, but I've got to be back here by 12:30-1.  I'm going to need to set out before 7am.

I'm cool with leaving early that Sunday morning as well. I'm sure
Renee (my wife) would like me back as early as possible to get a break
from our two small kids. So I'm game with leaving a bit early, no
worries.

Going back will not be a problem for me. I am going the other way,
farther into the mountains.
