Studentswho are going to be taking an ACS Examinations Institute exam have study materials available in some areas. The Institute is always working to expand this array of study materials. Right now, there are three printed study guides. We also have a variety of practice tests for students.
This guide includes 201 pages of information and over 600 problems separated into first-term and second-term general chemistry material. Each section contains 8 chapters of material that also aligns to most general chemistry textbooks for a seamless addition to study materials for students. Each chapter is designed with an introductory section of the material including common representations and where to find this material in a textbook. The second section provides worked examples of typical, multiple choice questions including how the correct answer is determined as well as how the incorrect answers were determined. Also included for each study problem is a listing of the corresponding practice questions that use that concept. The final section is a series of practice problems to test the concepts collectively. The key is provided on a separate page for all study and practice problems.
This guide is the newest update to our suite of study materials. A second edition was released in early 2020 with over 240 pages and over 600 unique problems. The guide is organized similarly to the general chemistry guide with a clear separation of first-term and second-term material. Each chapter is organized with study and practice questions where the study questions take you through the problem solving process of key problems explaining the correct process and also explaining the incorrect processes leading to incorrect answers. These study questions are then linked to practice questions where you can work through multiple choice questions and check your answers. Additionally, there are two culminating chapters linking all previous material: Multistep Synthesis and Applications of Organic Chemistry.
The study guide section is broken into the nine sections given on the CLEP chemistry website. Each of the sections comprises a certain percentage of the CLEP exam and this guide will loosely follow those percentages.
Explanation: The other answers are at least plausible as 108 represents the atomic mass of silver and 68 represents the difference between atomic number and atomic mass (the number of neutrons). There IS isotopic variation in most atoms, but that doesn't change the atomic number (number of protons).
Explanation: This problem comes from the ideal gas law (PV = nRT). Temperature needs to be expressed in Kelvin, not C. Answers a and b both plug 25 C into that expression. Volume needs to be expressed in L, not mL. Only d uses the correct units for all variables.
Explanation: Periodic trends in the acidity of binary hydride compounds increase as you go from the top to the bottom of a group on the periodic table. The ability of the conjugate base to stabilize the negative charge that forms with the loss of the H+ ion is the key. The ions formed when all of these compounds lose a H+ get larger as you go down a group; that larger volume helps stabilize the resulting anion.
Explanation: Why? The second ionization of sodium requires the removal of a core electron. Core electrons require significantly more energy to remove than valence electrons. The electrons removed from Mg and Al are only valence electrons.
As the molecular weight of the noble gas increases, the freezing point decreases. Helium forms highly polar molecules The London dispersion forces between helium atoms are less than the London dispersion forces of the Xenon molecules The London dispersion forces between helium atoms are greater than the London dispersion forces between Xenon molecules.
While quite short on the study side of things, the official CLEP book is the go-to final practice test. Since this is the only official practice test available, I normally use it as my final spot check before taking the test.
REA offers a great combination of CLEP study tips, exam study materials, and detailed practice tests. This book functions well as the central pillar of a strong CLEP prep strategy, with resources like the Official CLEP Study Guide (above) providing a great final practice test at the end.
This document contains study guide questions for different sections of a chapter on matter and change. The sections cover the definition of matter, its states and properties, mixtures, elements and compounds, and chemical reactions. Students are asked to define key terms, describe differences between concepts, and state fundamental principles like the law of conservation of mass.Read less
