Here's one that was recommended to me:

Communicating Design by Dan Brown || http://tr.im/px90

And here's one that I'd like to read:

Selling Usability: User Experience Infiltration Tactics by John Rhodes

The book we just read had a reference to another, less technical book...
Definitive Book of Body Language: Why What People Say Is Very
Different from What They Think or Feel
Looks really neat.

Have many people read "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum?" I think
that would be a great choice.

I haven't heard much about "Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate)
Everyday Things" by Donald Norman (The Design/Psychology of Everyday
Things), but it sounds interesting. I would also vote for the Book of
Body Language.

I'm into the Definitive Book of Body Language.
Of everything else mentioned above - "The Design of Everyday Things"
by Norman looks like a good read.

I would like to read Communicating Design by Dan Brown || http://tr.im/px90

I highly recommend The definitive book of body language by Allan and
Barbara Pease if we want to read a Non UX book. I have also read What
every body is saying an ex - Fbi agents guide to speed reading people
by Joe Navarro but the book by Allan and Barbara Pease is much
better.

"Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things is an
entertaining book It does not "teach" you anything necessarally. It
talks about expanding our field to include more PET (persuation
emotion and trust) type analysis. To think about the fact that it is
not alway how usable something is but how much we Love it.

I have read some of Dan Brown's Communicating Design book. It's very
good, but focused *solely* on crafting deliverables (competitor
analyses, content inventories, site maps, wireframes, etc.) and
presenting the information to clients, and *not* on UX methods and
practices. (Dan Brown states this in the beginning of the book.)

My vote for a UX-related book would be either for Communicating Design
*if* we made time for a deliverables show-and-tell and soft critique.
I'd love to see other UX practitioners' deliverables as well as get
feedback on some of mine.

My vote for a 'non-UX' (although still very pertinent) book would be
the Definitive Book of Body Language.

I like the idea of a 'non-UX' book.  I have been envisioning alternating between big picture thinking books and technical hands-on UX books.  Keep chiming in everyone, this is great stuff!

Here's the poll for August's book club selection:

http://poll.fm/134kt

The poll ends at noon on Tuesday August 4th so make your selection
soon!

Also, here's a Google Spreadsheet with all of the previously read
titles and all suggested titles:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AuGuoXUO2mfwdHg5WFo0REIzR0wyWjFrcC1HOWRDeFE&hl=en

If there's something else you'd like to read, add it to the end of the
list.

Thanks!

Only 3 1/2 hours left to vote and we currently have a tie!

Which will it be? The Definitive Book of Body Language by Barbara
Pease & Allan Pease? Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday
Things by Donald A. Norman? Or will there be a surprise winner?

If you haven't voted yet, it only takes a second!

meeting? I'd like to make sure I can attend before ordering the
book. :)

How much time does everyone want? A month? 6 weeks? 2 months?  Do weeknights or weekend afternoons work better?

I'm good with a month or so. And weeknights work better for me but could do early on week-end afternoons too.

What if we pick the next book and have the meeting during the last week of a month? So, we'd meet to discuss the current book the last week of August and also during that week, we could run another poll to choose the book for September. Or, we could do a set date to meet (i.e. - the last Wednesday of every month)?

Thank-you!

Hello everybody,

My preference would be to alternate if possible between weekends and weeknights. With school age kids, weeknights during the school year are very difficult between homework, activities, etc. Sunday afternoons would be my preference.

Along those lines, having more than a month to read would also be good. 6 weeks-2 months would be my preference.
Thanks,
Lori

Yeah we also need to factor in the time it takes to get the book delivered if people are ordering online.  Let's make this one a Sunday afternoon since we haven't done that in a while.

Here are some dates:

September 13
September 20
September 27

If someone will third September 20th, then that's our winning date...

While we wait for that, any suggestions for a venue?  I've been trying to rock the web studio angle for the after work events, but on previous sundays, we had done the cafe thing.  When I chose Naked Chocolate Rittenhouse last time, it was so we could wander to Rittenhouse Square if we wanted to.  Any objections to that? Or do you want to go to a place where they serve pints of beer?

Ok. More conflicts other than Jewish holidays (thanks Jeremy-I didn't even pick up on that. What kind of JUX am I?) & IDEA09, the weekend
Of Oct 3 & 4 is Podcamp Philly in case anyone is going. I'm not planning on it, but someone else may.

Also, how do people feel about a standard regional UX community happy hour? Whoever shows up shows up, always the same date, like the 3rd Wednesday or similar.
