- Mini, Print (PDF), Web, Full Source Article Versions -
There are three versions of each numbered System News article.
The Mini version is a brief summary of the article and is used
to make the text version of the newsletter and the front
section of the PDF Newsletter.
The Print (PDF) format versions are used in each individual section
of the PDF such as Storage and Servers.
The Web version is longer
and contains more details than the Mini or Print version.
The verbose (or Full Source) version contains a much
more detailed article or a URL to the original material that our
reports were based on.
- Adding New Subscribers -
Qualified subscribers will have an interest in or a need to
stay informed about Sun, Sun products, Sun compatible solutions,
Sun news and technology.
Please encourage your customers, friends, colleagues, etc.
to subscribe via System News' main Web site:
http://sun.systemnews.com/adduser
(about 50 country editions to choose from)
After this form has been submitted, the new subscriber
will be added to the database in a suspended mode. An
email message will be sent to the new subscriber with
instructions on how to enable their subscription by
simply clicking on the URL included in the message.
iForce partners can login to http://www.systemnews.com
as an iForce partner and subscribe.
- Per-subscriber Customization -
The newsletter has been customized for you: your name, your
company's name and email address are merged into the PDF
newsletter.
The email message that delivers the newsletter has also been
customized; that's why it's okay to include your password in the
URL that logs you into the System News SAT Web site.
Whether you choose PDF or text, only the sections that you have
enabled in your profile will be included in your newsletter.
Sections are created when there is appropriate content.
Available sections include:
News, Features, Servers, Workstations, Storage,
iPlanet, Software, Hardware, Java[TM]
Technology, iForce Solutions, Education,
Developer, SysAdmin,
Entry Level Servers, SunTone and MarketPlace.
Additional sections are being developed. Some will be from Sun
Business Units, some will be from major ISVs. We will
soon conduct a survey to determine which ISVs the readership
would like to see included.
- Different Formats Available -
The newsletter is produced in several formats. You can
choose which format you would like for your copy of the
newsletter:
- Text
for each article:
title
one paragraph summary
URL to longer version of article
- PDF
Formatted newsletter in ISO A4 or US Letter paper
sizes. The first section consists of a one paragraph
summary of each article (the Mini).
Additional sections will be added to your newsletter
based on their availability and your profile.
- HTML
(This name is a little misleading).
An index that consists of one line for each new article
and the URL to new weekly Web site
- All
URL to new weekly Web site,
index of new articles (a table of contents),
text in email message body,
custom PDF as an email attachment.

- Features of the Web Site -
Weekly/Monthly Archives
The http://sun.systemnews.com Web site is organized into
weekly and monthly archives. The versions of the articles on
the Web site are more detailed than the text or PDF versions.
Weekly Quiz (Q+A)
There is a weekly quiz with answers and links to the article
from which the question and answer were drawn.
Search Engine
You can also search the System News archive by keyword.
Select Article by Number
You can enter a 4-digit article number and be taken to
that article in the appropriate weekly archive.
- Adding Additional Sections: Survey -
In the near future, we will conduct a survey asking
which vendors you would like to see with their own optional
section. A second survey will list the most popular vendors
suggested in the first survey and ask you, the reader, to rank
your interest in news from each of the top vendors.
We will use these survey results to expand the newsletter
in the direction that is of the most value to all of
our subscribers.
- Custom Editions -
We make custom editions of our newsletter for Sun iForce
Partners and various groups around Sun.
