Hello All,

As you may be aware, the UN has declared 2015 as "The year of soils". I can say with some confidence that this will not happen again in our lifetime and I believe that soil science practitioners and those in related fields should recognize this occasion. Can we discuss before we get into the hustle and bustle of the new academic year?

Regards,

Renaldo Belfon

As you may have heard, the General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils!  The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, is facilitating the implementation of the International Year of Soils (IYS).  SSSA has been developing plans to prepare for this monumental opportunity to celebrate soils and tell the story of the urgent need to raise awareness and promote the sustainability of our limited soil resources.

Monthly Themes
Commemorating a year-long event takes extensive planning.  The IYS Planning Committee has been hard at work - monthly themes have been developed and members have been recruited to lead each month.

Soils: What They're all About
Soils Support Urban Life
Soils Support Agriculture
Soils Clean and Capture Water
Soils Support Buildings/Infrastructure
Soils Support Recreation
Soils are Living
Soils Support Health
Soils Protect the Natural Environment
Soils and the Products We Use
Soils and Climate
Soils, Culture, and People

We Need Your Help
Now, we are asking for your involvement.  We need members to assist our monthly leaders in developing activities for members to take to their communities and activities for educators (formal and informal), in the K12 grade levels.  Many of our monthly leaders will be working on these activities during this summer and fall.

i-heart-soil-smallSoil Selfies!
Do you "heart" soil?  Participate in our just launched I "heart" Soil photo campaign.  Request I "heart" Soil stickers (in English or 10 other languages) and we'll send a few stickers to you.  Then, take a photo while at a favorite location, on vacation, or at an interesting soil site - with the sticker - and submit it to us.  We'll be loading the photos on a map so others can see where we all "heart" soil.

Visit our SSSA International Year of Soils webpage to volunteer and request stickers.  And, watch for future updates - we'll be keeping you up to date with our IYS plans, including collaborations with other soil science societies around the world!

Indeed there is the opportunity for integration of efforts for some multidisciplinary approach to tackling some of our soil related issues.

Hi all.
I offer my support to this as well. I suggest that we try focus our ideas around a central team. Currently sustainable development is at the forefront and may be a good avenue to explore. I.e -soil management / conservation towards sustainable development or maybe the importance of soils in sustainable development in the Caribbean. This is critical, especially in SIDS where there is intense competition in terms of landuse options, which often comprise the integrity of the soil resource and result in the opposite of what they are intend to achieve initially. Emphasizing and illustrating how soils can be managed and used sustainably , increasing awareness , and proposing ideas along these lines my be a good central team to focus on. It also facilitates collaboration with those outside of the field of soil science.

Regards
Ronald
