JOB DETAILS:
The Human Factors Specialist is part of a provincial Patient Safety team that provides leadership in promoting best practices in usability, patient safety and eSafety. A successful candidate will have strong analytical, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with a passion for usability and a creative eye for excellent design. A key role of the position is to support the organization in the area of patient safety through the application of expertise in human factors/usability engineering.
These positions may be located in Calgary or Edmonton based on the preferences of the successful candidates.
The Human Factors Specialist independently applies human factors methodologies (i.e. heuristic evaluation and usability testing) to examine processes, human error potential, and patient safety risk. Human Factors Safety Specialists also evaluate room designs, work-flow, equipment, user interfaces, information systems, paper and electronic forms and other patient safety related aspects of healthcare. This involves:
· Working with end users (clinical areas or otherwise) to collect user requirements through shadowing, interviews and focus group techniques.
· Using quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze data.
· Preparing detailed reports, presentations and prototypes of human factors evaluation results and design recommendations.
· Incorporating patient simulation into evaluation methodologies where appropriate.
· Working with operations to identify best practices in patient safety and eSafety.
· Providing consultation/advice based on evaluative findings for patient safety hazard assessment and risk mitigation.
Start Date: January 7, 2017 (flexible) / End Date: February 7, 2020 or April 3, 2020
To be considered for employment all candidates must be:
· Legally entitled to work in Canada.
· Willing to travel throughout the province as needed.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
· Master’s degree in a related discipline (e.g. Psychology, Ergonomics, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Design, Health Informatics, etc.) specializing in human factors.
· Demonstrable human factors body of knowledge including concepts, processes, design principles and tools.
· In-depth knowledge of user-centered design methodologies including ethnographic studies, task and user analysis methods, heuristic evaluations, and usability testing.
· Understanding of the healthcare industry. Experience applying human factors industry standards.
· Understanding of academic research and publishing.
· Experience developing design concepts, work flows, information architectures, wireframes etc.
· Experience designing within technological and environmental constraints.
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
· Client-management skills.
· Ability to plan, prepare and conduct both formal and informal usability assessments and evaluations.
· Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment and ability to maintain collaborative relationships with all members of the team.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills including strong presentation and technical writing abilities.
· Strong analytical and problem solving abilities; detail-oriented, self-driven, fast learner.
· Demonstrable project management skills (setting and managing scope, tasks, team members, schedules).
· Ability to plan and carry out responsibilities with minimum supervision and prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
· Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects at the same time.
