The University of Waterloo HFES student chapter and the Advanced Design Lab is pleased to host a talk by Professor Derek Koehler on Intuitive Assessment of Probability. Coffee and donuts will be provided.

Speaker: Dr. Derek Koehler

Abstract: How do people evaluate the probability of uncertain events, and how do such evaluations affect their decisions about how to act in the face of uncertainty? Two lines of research are reviewed that identify systematic biases in how people judge probabilities (baserate neglect) and make decisions under risk (probability matching). Both biases can be understood as the result of the interplay of two types of cognitive processes, one intuitive and the other deliberative.
