Hi Mark,
My team at Microsoft (the Research & Intelligence team in the Windows and Devices Group) is looking for outstanding summer interns and full-time user researchers. Below is a brief description of what our team is looking for. We’re particularly excited by students who have shown a clear and demonstrated passion for learning, creative problem solving, and the practical application of human insights and behavioral research to real-world problems.
If you or your colleagues know of anyone who might fit that description, I would love to see their resume. One or two of my teammates will be visiting Waterloo in early November, and we would be interested in meeting with potential candidates then.
While we’re on campus, we would also be happy to drop in on any HCI student group meetings to connect with students and answer questions, or share details on the role of HCI practitioners in industry with one of your HCI classes. If it’s possible to arrange for a quick tour of any labs, that would also be great.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and please forward to the other HCI faculty at Waterloo.
Thanks!
Kim

USER RESEARCH ROLE:
We're looking for passionate and innovative User Researchers to join the Research & Intelligence team working on Windows, Xbox, HoloLens, Surface Hub, and the social, cloud, and creative experiences that support these platforms. As a User Researcher within the Windows and Devices Group, your role is to discover, describe and predict user behavior... and ensure these insights are activated as real product and process change. You'll partner closely with Designers, Program Managers and Software Engineers to be directly involved in creating compelling new experiences, and will be expected to:
- Bring a wide range of both tested and innovative research methods to your work.
- Define a strategic research direction, producing high quality primary and secondary research that will yield durable insights that have impact across our division.
- Collaborate closely with partners and peers to generate effective research plans and ensure the production of great outputs.
- Triangulate across qualitative research, instrumentation data, and other sources of customer insight.
- Activate research findings throughout the entire product design cycle, leading to innovative and outstanding products for our customers that are fueled by a clear understanding of customer needs, habits, behaviors, and beliefs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong candidates will have the following experiences and qualities:
- An advanced degree in psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience conducting user- or human-centered research, including user-centered design practices and experience with evaluative methodologies spanning traditional lab studies, field research, and expert review.
- A working knowledge of research methods including experimental design, data analyses, and data synthesis. Strong quantitative skills are an asset here.
- A strong and demonstrable history of research planning and execution; measurable impact on “shipping” product experiences; and the leadership to build, manage, or influence product processes to ensure products remain customer-focused.
