Cats are coming into heat now, with the first wave of births happening by
March. Please don't wait for spring to spay and don't wait until the
mythical 6 months of age to spay, 9 months to neuter. Do it sooner rather
than later (by 4 months is fine; we do it by 3 months and earlier, if the
kitten is robust and healthy).

Spaying your cat *before* she comes into heat will virtually eliminate the
possibility of her developing breast or ovarian tumors later in life and
will also help rule out possible uterine infection.

"Early" spaying/neutering is nothing new. Animal shelters have been doing
it for some 10 years now. Many vets can and will spay at earlier than 6
months if you ask them to (and you shouldn't have to ask, but there it
is). Kittens bounce back quickly from the surgery and heal fast.

I simply cannot think of a reason not to sterilize your pets as soon as
possible, and certainly before that first heat (or that first spray, in
the case of the male).

That's interesting information. I was always told (by my parents -
very old information) that a cat should be at least 12 months old.
Until we moved to an apartment last year, our cats were outdoor cats
and we had them on the cat anti-conception pill (with tuna flavour !).
Could have saved ourselves a lot of work (feeding the cats their pill
every week) if we had known about the possibility of early spaying. I
just had my cats (now 2 years old) spayed last week.
BTW, Poes was not on heat only during spring. She was on heat 3 weeks
a month the whole year around. I will miss her loud and noisy on heat
behaviour.
Does anybody know if the cat anti-conception pill has any positive or
negative effects on cats ?

Esther, you must be somewhere other than the US, where the contraception
pill for animals has been withheld from the market (I won't get into my
opinions of why). Here, the only alternative is surgical, which I
believe is the best and most effective anyway.

How do you know the pills were tuna-flavoured? :-)
