I'd like to vote that we keep the telnet-into-Watstar service.

It is usefull for the math students who take E&CE courses as well as the
staff.

Our lab. signup software is DOS based and the only easy access from off
campus or math or from any other OS is thru telnet.

Hopefully we'll move it to something web based; but that is over a
year distant.

In article <88945261...@globe.uwaterloo.ca>,

I would like to ask how we will be able to access files on
Sloaris (<grin>) once the telnet is gone? Are the accounts going to
become simply UNIX drive space SMB mounted for us? If so, that is
great (since FTPing stuff will still work), if not, that really
sucks and I vote for the telnet as well (and I agree with Eric,
if I am at home and I need to sign up for a lab, I don't want to have
to come all the way back in just to do it).

Huh? TELNET will continue to work for Solaris machines like ece,
demorgan, etc.

Yes, part of the Waterloo Polaris strategy is to move to open servers
(such as Unix). This is already partly true for Math Waterloo Polaris
users as they have a P: drive which is their Network Appliance/Unix
user space. So they can already FTP or SMB from home... me too.

Eric is not talking about TELNET to get at files because of the
Watstar server, he talking about some legacy DOS application.

Legacy!!
I'll have you know that a new Win 95 release came out a month ago :) :)

The only problem is that the whole concept of that program is that it
uses Watstar drives (using access) to operate a shared file.
When we came up with that lab software a few years ago I was tempted to
do it with Majordomo; but the DOS based version was faster, and far superior
in a every way.

Legacy does not mean bad. The program in question was designed for
a time when it was the best solution, and it probably still is a good
solution though not the most universal anymore.

I seem to recall you mentioning a Web form version for the future.
That too will be a fine solution for a while, but nothing in computers
is ever permanent. No one should be offended that any technology will
eventually have to be replaced.
