Does anyone know if there's free web pagers (ie. programs like ICQ) that
are cross platform compatible between *nixs and Windows?
Thanks,

Um. Last time I checked, ICQ was free[1], or has that changed?
And, don't they have a Java version?

[1] - Or, are you talking about the server-side software being free, or
are you using free to mean "open-source", or both, or ???

Sure, but as [1] stated, not open-source blah blah.
: And, don't they have a Java version?
Which is damned slow and not as functional in the *nix world.

I believe that someone has released an ICQ library, and there are native
unix versions of ICQ, with source.

See above. The fact is, ICQ has something big going for it in that it's
the most widely used, and so the most people can page you with it...

Perhaps I should add that I'm looking for something that is also:
1) free
2) can operate in a LAN environment
3) can interoperate between *nix and win32
Thanks,
-Edward
PS. Where are these unix versions of ICQ with source?

Doesn't exist. There is an ICQ clone only. Mirabilis has refused to
a) publish it's protocol
b) publish it's source code
As a result several people have reversed engineered the protocol,
and created some clones. There is xicq and micq, which are the
only real functional icq clones. A port for Be is coming also.
In the meantime the ICQ for java (official) is probably your best bet.
micq can be found at: micq.home.ml.org via FTP only. There is also
a copy of the current icq protocol, (as we know it) and some additional
information on the recent protocol changes, mostly relating to ICQ 98a,
the Win95/NT client.
Xicq... you'll have to search for it yourself.
Ultimately, there is also the ICGnu project, which aims at the following:
a) GNU GPL of course
b) distributed database
c) ports to all platforms
d) security not via obscurity
etc. etc.
However, icq clones are barely functional. ICGnu is still being drafted
and there are other icq-like programs, but ICQ is still your best bet
right now. Just search for ICGnu or look around, you'll get plenty of
links.

There is not yet a unix/linux version of ICQ But they ARE making one. as far
as a release of their source I really don't have any idea but I do know that
a unix version is coming out. Check out Http://www.icq.com/download/ there
is a blank where you enter your E-mail address and they will send you a
message as soon as it is released.
