-- Hello Unix people!
I am need of some help with a project I am working on. When I started out
working on a y2k analysis procedure for workstations and servers I was only
worried about WinXX, NT and Novell O/S's. Now Unix machines have appeared as
an unaccounted variable. I am completely unprepaired to deal with Unix. I
have worked quite a bit over the
past few days surfing the net and reading, but now I need your help on
whatever issues
you can guide me on. To narrow my focus and maybe even complete it in some
areas.
My primary issue is finding a virus scan that will run across all platforms
of Unix (if this is even possible). I need a virus scan program like Dr.
Solomons Magic Bullet. One that runs from a boot disk. Any suggestions here
would be welcome. I searched many Unix pages and some Virus Scan companies,
but was unable to find much reference to such a product. I tried emailing
the larger companies, but with no response. So that is why I am coming to
you. Once again. The virus scan must run solely from a boot disk and cover
as many Unix variants as possible!
My secondary problem is finding out about Unix base commands. I want to run
a batch file which will collect all the file names and their paths on a
hardrive. In windows, dos
or NT I made my own. You simply would run this batch file and it would read
all the dirs and files on the hd and give you softcopy on the disk you ran
the batch file from. Is this possible with Unix? Are the basic commands
similar enough that you can make a batch like file and run it on all Unix
machines?
My third issue involves finding out the common O/S's for the machines
thought to be prevelant in networking.
I think I know that
Sunsparc server 10 = Sun O/S 4.1.3
Sunsparc classic = Solaris 2.X V 6.3f02
Digital Alpha Station = Digital Unix 4.0.d
I also know I have to deal with SCO, CTOS and HPunix.
Now here is where I am having some problems. Does anyone know the common
O/S's for these machines?

Thank you for your help. I don't expect you to answer all questions, or even
any. All imput from you is a bonus. Please feel free to point out any
incorrect thinking displayed by myself in this letter. PLEASE help in any
way you can. Whether it be directing me to good informational links or
directly telling me of a product or statement which will solve one of my
many problems. Many thanks!
