MiKTeX 2.1 - Package Installation Problem

Hi...

When I try to install a new package in MiKTeX 2.1 using the MiKTeX ->
MiKTeX Options -> Packages The installation process takes a too long
time that I have to cancel it after several minutes. In some cases I
wait upto 5 mins to install a small package such as geometry before I
cancel the process. I tried several download sites but still the same
problem. However, when I try to download the package manually (by
downloading it to my hard disk first, latex it, and put the required
style files in the appropriate path), it works perfectly well and super
fast. The only problem with this is that eventhough the package is
installed, it is not checked in the MiKTeX Packages tree (in the MiKTeX
-> MiKTeX Options -> Packages tab). Any idea on how to make it checked
by the way?

Any input (on either problem) is highly appreciated.
I am using Windows 98.

I downloaded all of MiKTeX and installed it. The installed packages
are indeed checked. Am on Win98SE. Strange that you don't.
