If you still want to stick with amsthm, try writing
\theorempreskipamount13pt
in your theorem definitions and see if this works. Both packages have
similar syntax so you may find that this works.
Feel free to check out the "Educational Materials -> LaTeX" content on my
site (see signature below). Provided is my LaTeX package and "ntheorem.std"
file that I use for theorem definitions (the above code came from the
"ntheorem.std" file). Lastly, if you're going to convert over to ntheorem,
read the ntheorem documentation because there are a couple of "sticky
points" that it has with amsmath and related packages.
