Readings for Optimization Chapter:
All except 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.3.4, 6.3.5, 6.3.6, 6.3.7, 6.5, 6.5.1
Optional: RQ 6.4, 6.7
Pen&Paper Exercises: Feb 5th: RQ 6.15, 6.26 and Exercises 6.1 and from
Computer Problems 6.7: You can use Matlab to plot.
Computer Problem Due Feb 12th: Solve the problem from Chapter 5, Exercise
problem 5.9 (the same you solved by hand for this week assignment) using
optimization of the phi function formulated with the nonlinear equations.
Use (i) Steepest descent method and (ii) Newton Method. Also solve with
matlab routine for minimization and the matlab routine for
solving nonlinear equations. Compare and discuss.
Thamayanthi will do the computer problem this time. Jafar will be
available for tutorial on the optimization problems.
