Title: Exploring Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology
Using the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP)
Dr. Simms received his Ph.D. in 2002 at the University of Iowa, where he
worked with Dr. Lee Anna Clark. After completing his clinical
internship in 2001-2 at the Wisconsin Psychiatric Institute and Clinics,
University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar
and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa in
2002-3. He is currently an Assistant Professor at SUNY,
Buffalo. His research interests are in psychological assessment,
dimensional models of personality and psychopathology, and computerized
adaptive testing and item response theory.
Abstract:
Assessment of personality disorder traditionally has focused on the
categorical-medical model specified by the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). However, the personality
disorders described by the DSM have suffered from a number of important
limitations, such as poor reliability, substantial comorbidity across
personality disorders, heterogeneity within each disorder, and limited
construct validity. A number of dimensional systems have been
proposed to address these concerns. The Schedule for Nonadaptive
and Adaptive Personality (SNAP) provides one such system. The
development and features of the SNAP will be reviewed and several case
examples will be presented to demonstrate the clinical utility of a
dimensional system.
