RESEARCH ASSISTANTS NEEDED - O'NEILL CHILD LAB

Do you want to gain valuable research experience in a child research
laboratory? I am currently seeking to fill as soon as possible for
Fall and Winter term a number of positions in my laboratory, the UW
Centre for Child Studies. These positions will be related to the
Canadian Early Childhood Language Project. A commitment of at least
8-10 hours a week is mandatory. Although these positions begin as
volunteer positions, if a student is successful in their duties as a
volunteer, then the position
converts to a paid position, usually after about 8 weeks.

Interested students are invited to submit a resume and
transcript by email to myself and my Laboratory Project Manager, Mare
Appleby. We are seeking to fill these positions by September 20 at
the latest (and sooner if possible). We will begin interviewing as
soon as applications are received. Thus students are encouraged to
apply as soon as possible. If you are currently off-campus but
interested in these positions, please submit your materials as soon
as you can so we can set up a time for an interview as soon as you
are back on campus.

Students with strong academic records, excellent organizational
abilities, and who display a serious interest in research will be
given priority. As the positions will involve interacting with the
public, a mature, outgoing manner is also a plus.

There are currently two types of positions available. In your email,
please state which position(s) you wish to be considered for. Your
email should also give a short description of why you feel you would
be well-suited for the position. (We will have your resume to see
this in detail, but it is helpful to provide us with the areas of
your resume you wish to highlight that are relevant to these
positions.)

1. LAB RECEPTIONIST: For this position, it is necessary that a
student could be in the lab at least 2 hours for a minimum of 4 days
a week. This position also requires a student with excellent PHONE
and EMAIL skills. The student will need to explain the research to
parents contacting the centre, answer questions about the research
project, and collect demographic data from parents, mail out
questionnaires, and log returning questionnaires. The majority of the
student's time will be spent on email or on the phone. You must have
excellent writing skills for the email portion (i.e., be a good
speller, be familiar with traditional letter writing skills). The
student must enjoy speaking and corresponding with parents. This
position also required excellent organizational skills as the
email/phone portions require day to day monitoring and great
attention to detail. The student must also be able remain very
focused on his/her work as well as be able to multi-task when
necessary.

2. COMMUNITY RECRUITERS/LAB ASSISTANTS: For these position, it is
necessary that a student be able to work a minimum of 8 hours a week.
Some of these hours can also be on weekends or early evening (5-8
p.m.). In this position, a student will be working with the public
over the phone (e.g., phoning daycare directors) and helping with the
recruitment of parents at community events and locations for the
Canadian Early Childhood Language Project. Some of these events take
place on weekends, and so students should be prepared to work one or
two weekdays (minimum) during a term. Some duties will also be in
the lab helping with day-to-day tasks (e.g., mailings, organization
of events).

Given that the project is ongoing for the next year, there is also
the possibility that the position can continue into the Winter, and
possibly Spring, term.

More information about this project and other projects in my lab can
be found at: www.childstudies.uwaterloo.ca.

Interested students should submit their cover letter (email), resume
and transcript to BOTH:

Dr. Daniela O'Neill at don...@uwaterloo.ca
Mare Appleby at mapp...@watarts.uwaterloo.ca

When your materials are received, you will be contacted by Mare
Appleby for an interview. Review of applications will begin as soon
as they are received and continue until the positions are filled.
