In the 'Installing OS/161 in the student.cs Computing Environment'
file (http://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cs350/common/
Install161.html), under Step 3: 'Configure and Build OS/161'. The
instructions say to type "./config ASST0". However, typing "./config
ASST0" into the terminal gives me the error "Illegal configuration
name ASST0". It gives me the same error no matter what name I try.

I'm stuck on this one step, does someone know what I'm doing wrong?

thanks,
Brendan

I'm having the exact same problem, so it's not just you. Anyone have
an answer?

You should post your questions to the course newsgroup for CS 350,
which is uw.cs.cs350. This group, uw.newsgroups, is used for
newsgroup administration-type inquiries and announcements.

I can't seem to find a uw.cs.cs350 newsgroup, I'm looking at the list
of uw.cs.* groups on google groups and it goes straight from cs349 to
cs351...am I doing something wrong here?

There is no guarantee any external-to-UW news server has a current and
full feed of uw.* newsgroups. To access uw.* reliably, see the
instructions at http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/cs/chip/gs/ExtNews.html

Most current web browsers and mail user agents can be configured to use
a specific news server, which does not interfere with the use of Google
groups.

You may wish to consider that professors and course personnel are not
obligated to consider addresses other than your official uwaterloo.ca
one to be associated with you for course purposes.

You're not doing anything wrong. Google doesn't have uw.cs.cs350.
Newsgroups are created by sending out a "newgroup" control message.
Sometimes Google makes our newsgroups available, sometimes not.
When they don't, I don't know why they don't. When they do,
I don't know why they do. When I created uw.cs.cs350, I sent
out 3 newgroups, several days apart. Google ignored them all.

Recently I created uw.clubs.wsic, and Google made it available.

I suspect that there is an intelligence within the Black Monolith
that reads our newgroup messages and judges their worthiness, and
getting Google to make a newsgroup available may be a matter of
stimulating the right neurons The previous newgroup messages
described uw.cs.cs350 as "Course newsgroup". I've just sent out
a newgroup describing uw.cs.cs350 as "CS350 - Operating Systems".
We'll see what happens,
