Thunderbird holds on to header information about old articles
for as long as I tell it to, apparently independently of when
the articles are actually gone from the server. So it's possible
thunderbird doesn't detect an article's absence from the server
until you actually try to read it.
Near the top of the window, the Quick Filter's Unread option
displays only articles marked as unread. The Message menu, Mark
sub-menu, can be used to mark as read all articles older than
a user-specified date. (This is for thunderbird under Linux.
I don't know how different this is from thunderbird under WINDOWS.)
