I admit I use Netscape for 100% newsgroup reading, but this is no good
trying to get uw.cs.* when off-campus and when on campus (in the labs)

What do you recommend? I've heard about tin, trn, and using pine for
reading mail. Please recommend one of those text-based mail readers,
something that's quick to navigate between groups and articles. If you
know of an online tutorial for your choice, please forward on the link
(URL).
