I wouldn't normally stick my fingers here where they don't belong, but
given the assignment's due at 1:45 PM tomorrow...

I restarted the license server under the se2006 account.

I don't know what's going to happen when I log out, but it's working for
now...

CSCF - I'd appreciate it if someone'd nuke the se2006 process and restart
it as root so that everything's "proper"...

First, I'd like to apologize to everyone who was affected by the stoppage
of the DST License Server. Looks like I was responsible for that. When my
group went to school to work on our SDT and found out we couldn't get a
license (Although we had one earlier), I started to play around in the STD
file structure to try and find out how the licensing system worked. I was
amazed to realize there are only 15 licenses for everyone using STD.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I found a bunch of commands that I
probably shouldn't have had access to run, and started experimenting. I
managed to stop the license server, but the start command wouldn't work
for me. My apologies for letting my curiosity get the best of me. I'm not
sure what I was trying to accomplish. I really didn't think it would let
me stop the server.

Thanks Graeme for getting it back up so soon. I'm in your debt. I'm sure
I would have had (and may still have) hoards of angry mobs chasing me
otherwise... I'm really sorry to anyone who was affected by the 30 minutes
of server downtime.

Do you realize how much damage you caused?

I feel as if your response to Chris' post was completely unwarrented. I'm
sure he knows exactly what has transpired from his actions, and he was even
brave enough to admit to it.

If you are angry at him, then be angry, but there is no reason to publicly
attack him through the newsgroup.

I've no information about this situation other than what's been
reported in uw.mfcf.gripe, but it seems that what someone did was:
- explore some software
- experiment with it
- discover a major security problem
- refrain from abusing it for personal gain or malicious purposes
- report the problem

Back when I was a student, such independent research was
encouraged, and significant problem reports were rewarded
(e.g. free beer at the Grad Club).

Ray's opinions are his own and do not represent the opinion of the
organization for which he works. (Neither do mine, of course.) --PR

(PS Chris's apology was genuine and timely, and I know he was trying
to help. But the correct thing to do on discovering a security breach
is to back out very carefully and notify those in charge.)
