bohmLAB event offers sensory experience

Touchscreen project at bohmLAB, architecture, Cambridge
bohmLAB holds its first workshop open house today, 1 - 6 p.m., in the Grand
Studios, 7-112 Grand Avenue, Cambridge. The entrance is on Melville Street,
across the street from the School of Architecture.

bohmLAB describes itself as "a collaborative experimental research group
at Waterloo Architecture Cambridge . . . [that is] a catalyst and model for
collaborative culture in the graduate program at WAC, strengthening the
development and dissemination of original knowledge within the school
community. Our process focuses on individual projects developed in a group
space where students share resources and learning, while providing critical
thought and feedback.

"The lab also provides agency to the graduate students at WAC, offering an
organization through which collaborations with other research groups and
individuals can be formally developed."

Current projects, many of which can be seen [11]here, include "Touch Screen
(pictured above): An interface designed to bring the hands and screen into
direct and playful contact. The viewer is invited to manipulate an elastic
fabric canvas with their hands; the interaction between blank canvas and
beams of rear-projected light cultivate creative interaction and the
experience of 'drawing with light.'" The lead in this project is Abe Galway.

So you want to be a Rhodes Scholar?

from the Graduate Studies Office

Oxford skyline
The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate scholarship supporting exceptional
students at the University of Oxford in England. Established in the will of
Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps most prestigious
international scholarship program in the world.

Applicants for the Rhodes Scholarship are assessed for their intellectual
distinction, physical vigour, character, commitment to service, and
leadership. Proven intellectual and academic attainment of a high standard
is the first quality required of applicants, but they will also be required
to show integrity of character, sympathy for and protection of the weak, the
ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the full.

Candidates must be Canadian citizens or persons domiciled in Canada and have
been born between October 2, 1986 and October 1, 1992. Candidates may apply
either in the province in which they are ordinarily resident (some
exceptions apply) or in the province in which they have attended university.

Applications and reference letters must be filed online through the website
for the Rhodes Trust in Oxford no later than October 15th, 2010 (the
University of Waterloo authorization code is "ON12"). University of Waterloo
official transcripts may be ordered by contacting Heidi Mussar at
[13]heidi....@uwaterloo.ca.

All candidates currently attending the University of Waterloo must
participate in an internal screening process and earn the endorsement of the
university president. Therefore, uWaterloo candidates must submit a hardcopy
of their application to the Graduate Studies Office no later than September
10th, 2010.

Candidates must ask their referees to submit a copy of their reference
letter to the attention of Elaine Garner in the Graduate Studies Office,
Needles Hall, Room 2201 (electronic copies may be emailed to
[14]ega...@uwaterloo.ca)

It is strongly advised that uWaterloo candidates do not actually submit
their online application to Rhodes until they have been contacted by the
Graduate Studies Office and have undergone the university interview process.

Applicants selected for the uWaterloo interview will be contacted by email
by Wednesday, September 15th. The University Scholarship Selection Committee
will then determine which applicants will be endorsed by the university and
will organize a supporting letter to be signed by the president of the
University of Waterloo.

Interested and qualified candidates are invited to familiarize themselves
with the complete scholarship criteria and apply using the online
application found at [15]http://www.canadianrhodes.org/welcome

Should you have any questions please contact Elaine Garner at
[16]ega...@uwaterloo.ca or by phone at 519-888-4567 ext. 32841.

Graduate Studies Office deadline: September 10, 2010

Notes on the brink of a long weekend

Damage to a fibre optic cable at the EV3 construction site caused phones to
go dead in Renison University College and Conrad Grebel University College
yesterday, reports Bruce Campbell, IST's director, network services. Student
residence networks in Renison, Grebel, and St. Paul's University College
were also disrupted. Workers began replacing the damaged cable from EV2 to
the nearby bridge over Laurel Creek today. "We are sorry for this loss of
service and major inconvenience to the users," Campbell says. The latest
word is that service will be restored "by Monday, at worst, but it should be
late Friday if all goes well."

Monday, August 2, is the Civic Holiday. University offices and most services
will be closed, including retail services stores, athletics and recreation
facilities (PAC and CIF), and most food services outlets. What will be open:
* Davis Centre library on exam-time schedule, open 24 hours;
* Dana Porter library open, noon to 6 p.m.;
* Mudie's eatery, in Village 1, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.;
* Student Life Centre and [18]Turnkey Desk open 24 hours; and
* [19]UW Police (dial 519-888-4911 off campus, 22222 on campus).

poster for Caribana parade If you are planning to visit Toronto this weekend
for [20]Caribana, an extra GO train will be available to bring you at least
part of the way home on Sunday evening. "For passengers travelling
westbound," ie, leaving Toronto, "the 8:10 p.m. Niagara Falls train out of
Union Station will make additional stops at Mimico, Long Branch, Clarkson,
Bronte, Appleby, and Aldershot." The extra train will also run Monday. For
specific schedule information, visit the schedules section at

About the new options for engineering students, described in
[21]yesterday's Daily Bulletin: the article fails to mention that these
options will be available in September 2011. We regret any disappointment
this may have caused.
