TORONTO TAKES THE LEAD AT OUA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

 

 

Windsor, ON – After day one of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Golf Championship tournament held at Sutton Creek Golf and Country Club in Windsor, ON, the Toronto Varsity Blues shot a combined 302 score and hold a two-stroke lead over the second-place McMaster Marauders (304). The Western Mustangs, Guelph Gryphons and defending champion Waterloo Warriors all sit in a crowded third place after shooting 309.
 
Individually, Mike Glenney of the Toronto Varsity Blues holds a one-stroke lead over the field, as he fired a one-over par 73. Waterloo's Jud Whiteside (Thornhill, ON) and McMaster's Mike Matunin (Unionville, ON) are tied for second with 74 each. Last year's individual champion, Mike Kearns (Meaford, ON), from the Guelph Gryphons, sits three-strokes off the lead with a 76.
 
The last time the Varsity Blues captured the OUA golf title was back in 1988, when Toronto's Dave Woods also claimed the individual championship.
 
On the women's side, Queen's Golden Gael Danielle Green is first, after shooting 80 on Monday. Two-strokes off the lead is a three-way tie for second including Nonie Marler (Tsawwassen, BC) from Guelph and a strong pair from Western, Sue Gleeson (Peterborough, ON) and Lindsey Edmunds (London, ON). The two-time defending ladies champion, Katie McIntyre (Barrie, ON) from McMaster, shot a 90 yesterday and sits tied for seventh place.
 
The two-day championship, sponsored by mikeweir.com continues today at Sutton Creek Golf and Country Club in Windsor, ON.
