Africa expert joins CIGI Campus

with material from the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)

Professor Robert I. Rotberg. Internationally-acclaimed expert on Africa
Robert I. Rotberg is taking a position as the inaugural Fulbright Research
Chair in Political Development at the Balsillie School of International
Affairs (BSIA) and Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the Centre for
International Governance Innovation (CIGI).

He joins the CIGI Campus in Waterloo from Harvard University, where he was
the founding director of the John F. Kennedy School of Government's
[14]Program on Intrastate Conflict and Conflict Resolution. Previously, he
was a Fulbright scholar at Carleton University's [15]Norman Paterson School
of International Affairs and [16]North South Institute.

"We are thrilled for Mr. Rotberg to join us at the CIGI Campus," says David
Dewitt, vice president of programs at CIGI. "Robert is an outstanding
scholar and an excellent addition to the group of world-class professors and
students on campus. He will contribute profoundly to the policy relevant
research and studies taking place this semester."

Rotberg serves as president emeritus of the World Peace Foundation and has
taught political science as the Massachusetts Institute of technology, was
academic vice president at Tufts University, and was president of Lafayette
College. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

[17]Fulbright Canada awards, specifically the [18]Visiting Research Chairs,
enable promising and prominent American scholars, as well as experienced
professionals to conduct research, develop collaborations, guest lecture,
and teach at select Canadian universities and research centres. At the CIGI
Campus, Mr. Rotberg will be working alongside other notable Africa experts,
including recently appointed CIGI Chairs Dr. James Orbinski (who is also
director of the Africa Initiative at CIGI), Alan Whiteside, and Jonathan
Crush.

The prestigious Fulbright international scholarly exchange program is named
after US Senator J. William Fulbright.

Faculty association extends social media reach

The [20]Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo (FAUW) has
recently broadened its online presence, according to an email sent out by
association president David Porreca. The association is now active on
[21]Facebook, [22]Twitter, and [23]Google+, and a [24]brand-new blog, which
will update every Monday.

"We invite you to have your say (guest posts to the blog are welcome!) and
encourage frank and honest discussion in every one of these fora," writes
Porreca. "We'll continue to produce the FAUW Forum, our print newsletter,
which will feature a "Best of" our blog posts, and will reserve email for
key, time-sensitive communications."

Questions, comments, and blog submissions can be sent to [25]FAUW via email.

Loose leaves at Campus Bubble

by Jacqueline Martinz, Federation of Students

Loose tea leaves at the bottom of a cup at Campus Bubble. For warmth when
the temperature begins to drop, or to ease the stress of a busy work day,
many people turn to tea. With the introduction of loose leaf tea to the
Campus Bubble menu this term, the number of people doing this in the
University community is bound to increase. Now, customers will be able to
savour a cup of Indian chai spiced with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and
vanilla or green tea with passion fruit flavour and marigold flowers.

"The bubble tea has always been popular, and people will love the loose leaf
tea," says Kumar Patel, vice-president administration and finance for the
Federation of Students, which operates Campus Bubble. "We let people sample
different flavours last term, and provide feedback. That's how we decided
what to offer."

Loose leaf tea has larger tea leaves than bagged tea, and these may be put
directly into the cup or into a tea infuser for a rich taste and aroma.

Faculty, staff, students and visitors have 11 different flavours to choose
from, and the options include black tea, green tea, herbal tea, and white
tea. More information about Campus Bubble including location and hours
[27]is available online.

Program offers support to dementia sufferers

by Christine Bezruki, Marketing & Communications, Faculty of Applied Health
Sciences

If you think dementia only afflicts the elderly, just ask Mary Beth Wighton.
At the age of 45, Wighton was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia, a
rare form of dementia with no treatment or cure.

"I'd known for years there was something seriously wrong with me and that it
was not depression. I just didn't know what it was," said Wighton, pictured
above, at right, with her partner Dawn (left) and daughter Brianna.

Surprisingly, accepting the formal diagnosis wasn't Wighton's greatest
challenge. "Being so young with a diagnosis of dementia baffled people. My
young age presented a challenge to most community programs, as I was not
'old' enough to take part in them."

After being turned away from several community programs, Wighton found
support at Waterloo's [14]Murray Alzheimer Research Education Program
(MAREP) in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. MAREP works directly with
those living with dementia and their care partners to help them develop
practical and relevant resources and tools to enhance quality of life.

"We have learned so much from our partners with dementia about how to better
support persons and families experiencing Alzheimer's disease and other
related dementias," said Sherry Dupuis, Director of MAREP. "And through
their involvement in our projects, they gain a sense of purpose, meaning and
empowerment in a world that still excludes persons with dementia because of
the stigma and misunderstanding that continues to exist."

Today Wighton dedicates her time to fighting that stigma by educating the
community about dementia and myths surrounding the disease.

On Monday, January 21, Wighton will speak as part of MAREP's [15]living well
with dementia public lecture and exhibition. Also scheduled to speak are Dr.
Peter J. Whitehouse, a professor of neurology at Case Western Reserve
University and Ann Marie Wilson, a partner in care and spokesperson for
those living with dementia. To register for the event call 519-888-4567 Ext

Canada's largest job fair to mark 20 years

by Karina Graf, Co-operative Education and Career Action (CECA)

Students and employers discuss job opportunities at last year's Job Fair.
On Wednesday, February 6, thousands of students and alumni will connect with
employers at the annual Partnerships for Employment (P4E) Job Fair. Waterloo
alumnus Raju Patel remembers his first encounter with the firm he's worked
at for 14 years.

"I was about to leave the fair and hop on the bus when I stumbled upon
SapientNitro's small booth," he says. "After getting to know more about the
company and how they acted like no other agency I'd talked to, I started to
get excited." After an initial interview on campus and a second interview in
Boston, Raju's conversation at the fair paid off, "a few days later I got a
call with an offer," he explains. "That was the day that changed my life."

Current students and alumni can follow in Raju's footsteps and connect with
employers at this year's Job Fair. It's the largest fair of its kind in the
country, with more than 160 organizations recruiting for a variety of
positions, including full-time, co-op, summer, and part-time work
opportunities. To celebrate the 20^th anniversary of the fairs, the upcoming
job fair will also feature three LinkedIn sessions on the topic of
"Leveraging LinkedIn to network and job search... Learn how to use it like a
pro", delivered by Steve Watt, Marketing Manager for LinkedIn.

Since 1994, P4E - a collaboration between the University of Waterloo,
University of Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College -
has provided a unique opportunity for students and alumni to connect with
employers at two annual fairs. In addition to the Job Fair, P4E hosts a
Career Fair each September which features employers that promote full-time
career opportunities for graduating students and alumni. (Above right:
students and employers discuss opportunities at last year's Job Fair .)

The partnership between the four institutions fosters a unique environment
for sharing information and creating a large attendance of students--an
appealing environment for employers as they can fulfill their recruitment
needs in one day, reaching up to 4,000 students.

Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has attended the fairs regularly for
the past five years. "Our experience has always been a positive one," said
Tanya Murawsky of WRPS. "It's a way for our police service to reach out to a
large and diverse group."

Job Fair 2013 is being held at RIM Park in Waterloo on February 6. It's open
to students and alumni of the four partnered institutions. Bus
transportation to and from the fair is available every half hour throughout
the day in front of Hagey Hall. For more information, visit
[18]partners4employment.ca.

Last week's poll results: 47 per cent of you guessed correctly: after
viewing Orbis' vendor presentation, staff and students are most excited
about the email notifications and user interface of the new system.
Congratulations to last week's draw winner Nicole Joron from the Federation
of Students (FEDS).

This week's question: How many students and alumni typically attend the Job
Fair? [19]Take a guess and enter to win a CECA mug.

Socials, sessions, sales and sundries

The [21]VeloCity Social gets underway tonight from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Billed as "an event to give students interested in being involved in a
star-up project the chance to meet and network," the event is a casual,
relaxed social night that will include that most essential ingredient to
start-up success - free pizza. Students from all faculties and programs are
welcome.

Many high school students and their parents will be on campus this evening
for the annual [22]Grade 10 Family Night event, which will help students
learn what they can do now to prepare for applying to Ontario's
universities. The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. in the Theatre of the
Arts and will also appear as a live webcast.

An information session for the Beyond Borders international service-learning
experience will be held Thursday, January 17, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in
the Sweeney Hall White Room at St. Jerome's University. Beyond Borders is
"designed to help students develop leadership skills for a changing global
society, become aware of an concerned about social justice, and gain
valuable experience volunteering with development organizations at home and
abroad." More information about the program and how to apply is available
[23]online.

Later this week, an information session for the [24]2013 summer study in
China program, hosted by the Confucius Institute, will be held Friday,
January 18 at 2:30 p.m. in room 1303.

[25]The annual Renison book sale will be held Monday, January 21 to Friday,

Web browsers get a cup of Java in their lap

by Terry Labach, Information Services & Technology (IST)

The New Year started with a bang for computer security professionals, as
word spread about a new risk involving Java software and web browsers.

Web browsers allow additional software, called plug-ins or add-ons, to be
installed to enhance the capabilities of the browser. One such plug-in
enables browsers to run software written in the Java programming language.

Recent versions of Java have a bug that allows programs to bypass security
mechanisms. Attackers are able to craft web pages including Java programs
that make use of this bug. By visiting such web pages and executing these
programs, attackers are able to run arbitrary software on your computer.

Oracle, the maker of Java, and browser manufacturers are taking steps to
deal with this problem. However, there are actions you should take now to
protect yourself.

The best defence against these attacks is to disable Java in your web
browser. Windows users can configure the Java Control Panel to disable Java
in all browsers on their PC. Users of any operating system can disable Java
in their individual browsers. Oracle provides instructions to do this
[14]online.

Contact your faculty computer help desk or the Computing Help & Information
Place (CHIP) at extension 84357 if you need assistance in configuring your
web browser.

Unfortunately, some web applications require the use of Java, and you may
not be able to work without it. In this case, be cautious in your activity
on the web. Some things you can do to lower your risk:
* Limit the use of Java

* Use one Java-enabled browser only for sites requiring it, and a second
Java-disabled browser for all other browsing, or
* Turn Java off in your browser when you are not using web sites that
require it.

Don't click on web links without scrutinizing them and ensuring their
legitimacy.

Install software like NoScript (available for [15]Firefox) which prevents
your browser from running suspicious applications.

Professor receives CFI funding for project

PLACEHOLDER ONLY REMEMBER TO EDIT
A research facility that will one day develop the technology that enables
hybrid vehicles to feed energy into the power grid is among the innovative
research initiatives at the University of Waterloo that received major
funding announced today.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced today it is
contributing more than $4.7 million to four research projects at Waterloo.
The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official
Languages, announced that 75 projects at 34 institutions would receive a
total investment of more than $215 million by the Government of Canada
through the CFI's Leading Edge Fund (LEF) and New Initiatives Funds (NIF).

PLACEHOLDER QUOTE FOR FERIDUN. NEEDS APPROVAL

"The University of Waterloo is already one of the top research centres in
Canada, and this kind of support helps us to show the world that the work we
undertake here is relevant, cutting-edge and addresses universal issues,"
said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president & vice-chancellor of Waterloo. "I
congratulate the teams of researchers identified in this announcement, and
look forward to seeing their innovative ideas come to fruition."

The four research projects from the University of Waterloo included in
today's funding announcement are:

1. Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) Research Facility

Research: The Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) Research Facility
being established at the University of Waterloo will advance and
commercialize transformative research. The development of intelligent
software for use in vehicle computers will provide major reductions in
emissions and fuel consumption. It will lead to the establishment of plug-in
hybrid as an integral daytime supplier of energy, feeding into Canada's
electrical grid.

Lead researcher: Professor John McPhee, Department of Systems Design
Engineering and Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR)

Received: $2,128,182

2. Ontario Materials Technology: Harnessing the Power of Strategic
Multifunctional Materials for Emerging Technologies

Research: The proposed research will focus on the development of
multifunctional materials for new technology innovation. Multifunctional
materials are materials or systems of materials that are capable of
performing multiple "primary" functions, which will dramatically improve
system performance and reduce both product size and cost. They will be
designed and built by using new tools that enable Canadian researchers to
precisely fabricate structures of any shape and form in three dimensions in
the nanometer scale. The tools will put Canada among an elite group of a few
countries in the world with access to this capability to advance these
groundbreaking materials technologies.

Lead researcher: Professor Tong Leung, Department of Chemistry and Waterloo
Institute for Nanotechnology

Received: $1,474,545

3. Privacy Enhancing Technologies at a Global Scale

Research: Privacy-enhancing technologies, or PETs, allow people around the
world to maintain control over who gets to learn what they are looking up,
with whom they are conversing, and what they are reading. This project will
experiment on three particularly important classes of PETs. Private
information retrieval keeps private the information about what a person is
looking up in a database. Anonymous communications networks allow people to
use the

Internet without automatically revealing their identities or locations.
Censorship resistance empowers people around the world to decide for
themselves what information they would like to read online.

Lead researcher: Professor Ian Goldberg, David. R. Cheriton School of
Computer Science

Received: $654,545

4. Facility for Global Quantum Communication and Security Certification

Research: This project will propel Canada's high-tech industry into the
information age of the 21st century. The emerging quantum technologies can
change the way we process and communicate information. The most important

application in the near term is highly secure quantum key distribution
(QKD), implemented by sending individual particles of light (photons)
between distant user locations.

Lead researcher: Professor Thomas Jennewein, Department of Physics and
Astronomy and Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC)

Received: $490,000

CFI funding is used to establish world-class research facilities in Canada
with state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure. For more information,
