I've been trying to link the ARM box to the computer on both lines 1 and 2, so I can view what output I am sending to the trains.
I'm opening another serial port terminal, and setting it to 2400 baud rate, 2 stop bits, CTS/RTS lines, but it's still not showing any output, even from someone else's working program.
Are there further steps to take to set up a serial port on the linuxbox?

Have you set the terminal to listen on the Com Port that the device is
using?
You will need to set the terminal to listen to whatever device entry in
/dev/ that the Com Port is associated with.
