...how can he be so skinny? and live so phat?
> [that he's clueless about Transcendance's lineup]
but wait, i have clues!
and being sick at home with nothing to do, i will share them. any typos
are my fault.
T R A N S C E N D A N C E
March 30 1996 Toronto 4167603281
Mayday
is a new-to-Toronto DJ from Kentucky who specializes in new-school, more
experimental and ambient-sounding, melodic drum & bass.
Jarkko
Dubby jungle and ambience from the coolest bedreaded guy in Toronto.
Jarkko will open for Legion in a specially-designed and coordinated set.
Legion of Green Men live
are the quirky and personable twosome Alexander Addicus & Rubert J Lloyd,
better know as the production team Incranate, who record from their secret
"Caution Point" studio in Southern Ontario. They have been recording
since 1986 as Empirical Sleeping Consort (abstract sonic collage).
They then established their own label, Post-Contemporary, in 1992, and
began recording as Legion of Green Men (dubby, funky synthy ambience),
as well as Alkahest (dark lusty power-techno), and Xeuxis & the Painted
Grapes (jazzy lounge music meets psychedelic dub-pop). Legion itself
has released several 12" singles on Post-Contemporary, and then a debut
album Special Specific on +8 in 1995, which will now be re-distributed
in 1996 by Virgin Canada. Legion will be playing principally ALL NEW
MATERIAL for the upcoming Transcendance show (they have also appeared
at our Planetarium event in May 1995).
Autechre live
are one of the best-known experimental techno groups recording today.
From Manchester, the twosome Sean Booth and Rob Brown that comprise
Autechre have been recording since 1991 and have released since 1992 for
Warp (TVT/Wax Trax! in the US) with their heady, heavy mix of elektro
and hip-hop influenced electronics, a designed geometry of abstract
sounds. They currently have a new full-length, Tri-Repetae, which was
released in November 95 in the UK but which just came out in the States
in February. Autechre's two members also record either singly or
together as Gescom. They also played in Toronto two years ago.
Mark Broom
is one of the most happening underground experimental electronic DJ's
from London (UK). He has also recorded extensively under his own name
on Warp and New Electronica, and runs no less than THREE of his own
labels, Pure Plastic, IFAC & A-13. He is consideredc to be the Black
Dog/Plaid resident DJ and is well-touted for his eclectic mix of
schizophrenic techno with a hearty electro kind of feel. Mark appears
at Transcendance courtesy of a N. American tour of Autechre, Spacetime,
and Mark. Transcendance is the last date on the tour.
Spacetime Continuuum live
is the work of Jonah Sharp, a one-time Scot who moved to San Francisco
and began his own label, Reflective Records, in the summer of 1993.
(Jonah DJed for Transcendance at XOXO San Francisco, in September 1995,
and a profile on Reflective appears in the last issue of Transcendance
the magazine). Spacetime Continuum (Astralwerks US/Reflective UK) is
probably best-remembered for his first album in 1993 with Terrence
McKenna's superimposed ramblings about DMT called `Alien Dreamtime' (see
Transcendance mag issue #2 philosophy #3). Since that time, however,
Spacetime has moved on to explore more ambient-jnungle, bass-heavy
sounds and a more dance-friendly approach. Jonah's newest full-length
as Spacetime, Emit Ecaps, is out now and carries a heavy drum & bass
influence concomitant to his more serious, no-bullshit, unpretentious
character. Jonah has also recorded extensively for Pete Namlook's FAX
label (6 releases for Fax alone), and also appears on Trance Europe
Express One as well as Silent, Instinct, Rising High, Source Records UK,
Superstition Germany and Beyond Records UK.
Sunkissed live
is a new live act comprised of Peter Grove from S. Ontario, who has
recently jetted to the top of the Toronto live-act limelight. Sunkissed
played for Transcendance at our last event on January 13 and is writing
ALL NEW MATERIAL again for our upcoming event.
Algorhythm
"If you don't know Algorhythm by now, you will never ever ever know him".
Algorhythm appears for Transcendance once again as the sonic-blending DJ
in the experimental room, stringing the live acts together with his
eklectic obtuse sounds.
Black Absorbent House
----------------------
Split
is a newer Toronto DJ (formerly known as Klonk) who plays a rhythmic
blend of jazz-influenced house and dubby breaks.
The Stickmen
are duo Greg and Paul who run likely Toronto's most well-recognized,
crossover techno-influenced-house label by the same name. Aside from
extensive recording for their own label, the Stickmen have also appeared
on Strictly Rhythm a number of times, Definitive, Intellinet, Studio
K-7, FFRR, Sorted, and others.
Mark Farina
is originally from Chicago but now lives in San Francisco. Mark has
played in Toronto twice before and is currently in high demand
worldwide for his subtle blending of jazzy, moody, deep house.
Richie Hawtin
is Richie Hawtin. Featured at Fusion & Plastikman by Transcendance and
best known for his recordings as Plastikman and Fuse, as well as for his
label +8. Richie will close the house room.
