Here's the lowdown on the master surgen. (Massive spoilers ahead)

Last chance!

At the end of WWII, many buildings still had unexploded bombs inside of
them; before they were removed, signs warned people not to get near
them. Unfortunately for little Blackjack and his mother, someone
removed the signs from one of the buildings, and the bomb blew up while
they were passing by. Blackjack's mother died due to the blast;
Blackjack barely survived, thanks to a great surgeon and a little boy of
mixed race who donated skin to Blackjack (hence the scars and the
light/dark patches of skin on BJ's face.)
Blackjack grew up, regained movement in his limbs (he had become
quadraplegic due to the massive surgery), and entered medical
school--where a young classmate fell in love with him, but that's
another story ^_~. Anyways, Blackjack soon became an excellent
surgeon. Consumed by a desire for revenge, Blackjack began amassing
large amounts of money (in the form of very expensive surgeries) and
eventually gave the people who had caused the accident a taste of their
own medicine.
The little girl (who's name excapes me at the moment) who lives with
Blackjack is almost subplot within the whole tale: she was actually the
identical twin of an 18-year old girl who had never fully developed, but
was always growing in a lump at the side of said girl. When Blackjack
tried to remove the little girl, she stopped him with telekinesis until
Blackjack promised to give her a body. As soon as she got the body, the
little girl fell in love with Blackjack and declared herself to be his
wife, much to the surgeon's dismay and embarrassment. Later on, the
little girl usually accompanies Blackjack as his assistant.
Blackjack has had a record of unusual surgeries, including an alien, a
mummy, a ghost, and even himself! (Of course, this isn't quite possible
yet in modern day surgery.) He's pulled off quite a few miracles,
including bringning a young lad back from brain death--but he's also
lost quite a few patients. He has an arch-enemy in the form of a
Kevorkian-like doctor who believes that death should be a plausible
solution to a terminal illness, and a litany of admirers and critics.

Truth can be, of course, stranger than fiction, as this excerpt from a
forward I received shall prove:

INNER SKELETON
A 63 year old widow was admitted to hospital in Recife, Brazil,
suffering abdominal pains. X-rays showed that she was carrying a
20 inch long skeleton of a fetus which she conceived a decade
earlier. It had become lodged outside the womb and was never
expelled from her body.
