Holy Spirit Hospital undergoes Training in Emergency & Disaster Preparedness In K-East Ward

On 19th and 20th May, key staff of the Holy Spirit Hospital in K-East
ward will undergo the first ever Hospital Emergency & Disaster
Preparedness Course. The training is being organized under the aegis
of United Way Mumbai Helpline’s Corporate Ward Adoption Program in K-
East ward. The training will be imparted by Life Supporters Institute
of Health Sciences. This course is intended for administrators
handling disaster management, hospital administrators, health care
facility managers, emergency department physicians & nurses, public
health officials, who are responsible for hospital emergency planning,
or and any emergencies involving mass casualties that require the
major resources of a hospital.The training emphasizes on the aspects
that become critical when a hospital is required to shift gears from
routine medical services to emergency medical services in the event of
a disaster.

K-East ward is the largest ward in the city of Mumbai, with a
population of more than 10 million. However, there is no major
government/municipal hospital in K- East ward with a bandwidth to
receive mass casualties in times of disasters or any kind of mishaps.
The nearest municipal hospital is Cooper hospital which is in K- West
ward. Holy Spirit Hospital is the biggest hospitals in k- East ward,
and will be expected handles cases of mass casualties in events of
disasters, man-made or natural alike or epidemics such as swine flu.

Disasters, natural or man-made, forecasted or spontaneous, simple or
compounded, compensated or uncompensated all have one thing in common
i.e. large number of casualty with myriad injuries to be attended
immediately, with the threat of spread of epidemics which would need
to be contained and treated later. Survival of victims and reducing
the morbidity depends on the systematic response of the hospitals and
health care facilities that can be activated and sustained for
effective disaster mitigation.
