Hello all,
The International Socialist Organization is holding study groups
this quarter on the book
Sexuality and
Socialism, by Sherry Wolf. This is a great, timely book on the
history, politics, and theory of LGBT liberation, and should prove to be a great
discussion-generator as activists grapple with the questions on which way
forward for the LGBT movement. We just wanted to extend the
invitation to everyone.
Our first discussion group will be this
Sunday, Jan. 24th, at
4:00 in Suzzallo Café. We'll be discussing the
intro and
chapter 1, "
The Roots of LGBT Oppression" (covering the material
through page 41 of the book). For people who don't have a copy of the book
but want to join in on this discussion, we recommend reading Sherry Wolf's
piece on "The Roots of Gay Oppression" from the International Socialist Review,
available online at
http://www.isreview.org/issues/37/gay_oppression.shtml.
We'll have copies of the book at the study group on Sunday if folks want to get
their own copies then (or if you'd like to get a copy before then, email
is...@uw.edu
and we can hook you up!)
We'll probably be holding the discussion group every Sunday for the rest of
the quarter, covering a chapter or two each week until we get through the whole
book. We'll get a longer-term reading schedule hammered out soon.
The discussions are designed to be very free-form and open.
Let us know if you're interested in joining in on these readings and
discussions. Thoughts, questions, comments, concerns, and experiences are
all welcome!
And feel free to forward this along to anyone else who you think would be
interested!
Thanks,
ISO, UW
