Hi everyone,
Hope Turkey Day was good! Check out some of the ISO events this week!
1) Paper Sale: Wednesday, December 2nd from 11:00 to 1:00 outside of the HUB
Come chat it up with ISO members and get the newest edition of our biweekly newspaper, Socialist Worker (http://socialistworker.org/). We'll have a table setup with all sorts of revolutionary literature to checkout as well.
2) SOLE meeting: Wednesday, December 2nd at 5:30 in the School of Social Work on the UW campus (room B14)
Help us plan what steps SOLE should take next on campus and in the broader UW community to further protect the rights of LGBT people. There’s lots to discuss, and fresh ideas are welcome!
3) Weekly Branch Meeting: Wednesday, December 2nd at 7:00 in the School of Social Work on the UW campus (room B14)
Join the ISO for its weekly branch meeting. The first half of the meeting will be devoted to a political discussion of the Stupack Amendment and abortion rights. The second half we’ll be discussing our future plans for organizing at UW and the broader Seattle community. All are welcome!
4) Save the Date: The First Battle in Seattle: 1919 Seattle General Strike: Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00 in the School of Social Work on the UW campus (room B14)
Everyone knows that November 30 marks the 10th anniversary of the "Battle in Seattle" protests against the WTO. 40,000 plus trade unionists, environmentalists, anarchists, socialists and other protesters united to shut down the WTO. Fewer know about the first "Battle in Seattle": the 1919 Seattle General Strike. For five days in February over 100,000 workers not only struck, but they ran the city without the bosses or the governments approval. Mass kitchens fed over 30,000 a day. Limited laundry services and garbage collection for hospitals and milk deliveries for families were provided. For a brief time Seattle workers showed the power an organized working class has. Join us for a discussion on the lessons to be learned from both the 10th anniversary of the WTO protests and the 90th anniversary of the General Strike!
5) Save the Date: LIVE Showing of the “People Speak”: Sunday, December 13th, time and place TBA
Narrated by Howard Zinn and based on his best-selling books, A People's History of the United States and Voices of a People's History, “THE PEOPLE SPEAK” illustrates the relevance of these passionate historical moments to our society today and reminds us never to take liberty for granted.
