Hi everyone,
We would like to announce the "best project award" winner for STAT592/CSE599 Winter 2013:
"Travel Recommendation from Large Scale Online Photo Collections" by You Ren and Qi Shan.
This project looked at recommending cities to users based on photos they posted on Flickr and those of other users. The recommender system incorporated information about geo-locations, time stamps, and text information. This involved collecting 20 million travel photographs from Flickr and performing extensive data cleansing of these photos to gather this information in a reasonable format. The model accounted for subtle effects like seasonality and changing definitions of "interestingness" used by Flickr. The model was implemented in GraphChi and the results clearly demonstrated the importance of the side information on users and cities.
