Subject: uWaterloo Asia Entrepreneur Series in Beijing - August 16, 2014, Saturday Afternoon
Dear all,
As many of you know, the University of Waterloo has operated an office in Hong Kong since January 2013. For more information: https://uwaterloo.ca/hong-kong-foundation/
Ranked by Maclean's magazine as Canada's most innovative university for each of the past 22 years, the University of Waterloo has a tremendous start-up culture and support system. Its entrepreneurs successfully secure funding from Silicon Valley. Seven uWaterloo Velocity teams have been accepted by the Y Combinator Program, the most prestigious one for budding digital entrepreneurs.
Now we aim to launch a program to connect uWaterloo alumni within Asia, the uWaterloo Asia Entrepreneur Series. We will bring this series to cities in Asia, starting in Beijing. You also may regard this as an alumni get-together and networking-business opportunity.
Attached, please find a description of this program. We hope to have 20-30 of you interested enough to join this event. If you are keen to get involved, to be a judge with experience to share, or are an alumni with a start-up idea keen to consult your peers on whether you are at the right track, then please get in touch by August 8.
We will designate the venue soon (check this space later: https://uwaterloo.ca/hong-kong-foundation/events/uwaterloo-asia-entrepreneur-series-beijing).
Please RSVP by August 12 to me or Robert Beamish at hkfoun...@uwaterloo.ca if you would like to attend this event. Our Beijing Chapter presidents Brian Mei and Ivan Shen of whom are copied here.
If you have other uWaterloo friends who would find this event interesting, please forward this email to them. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.
Best,
Eva

Thank you, James!
Yes this is the first time we organise such event in Asia. The prize money is very small as the HK office doesn't have any budget to launch this series. Erica from Alumni Relations offers to help. My plan is to use this series as fundraising tool and to show case our alumni creativity and innovation, hopefully we can attract potential investors (alumni or VC) to see the value and would want to support this series.
In order to keep this series going, we will need to include non-alumni as well, as after all, we only have 3000+ alumni in Asia.
Initially, I wanted to bring the winning Velocity teams to Asia for a roadshow and to meet potential investors. This will happen, I was told, but won't be in 2014.
I will send you pictures of the event later. Have a great trip to the US!
Best,
Eva

Very interesting. I was just curious on:
What is the cash prize for the winner(s)?
Where is the prize money coming from?
Are uWaterloo alumni only eligible to enter?
Is this the first time organizing such an event?
I would love to attend but unfortunately I will be in US attending a conference.
Good luck!
