This is a beautifully written survey paper by Ken Ribet of Berkeley on
the mathematics
involved in Wiles' proof of Fermat's last theorem (modular forms,
elliptic curves, and Galois
representations). It actually fits pretty nicely in with
some of the basic themes I'll be talking about this week (and some of
next week).
