The two hour delay of unpenetrable fog at the start of the day yielded to sunshine, calm waters, and 60 degrees. In stark contrast to the promised “once you race the Fish, you are ready for ski season to begin” I think this event left everyone wanting more water time.
Tunni earned silver in the men’s vet single to Tim Willsallen of Cascadilla Boat Club. Age is definitely an advantage at this race, not a handicap.
Paul also took silver in the men’s open/master’s ltwt single to Timothy Braim of Saratoga. I don’t understand how this event works- you take open weight heavy young men in their 20s and race them against older lightweights? And the masters lights win? Hopefully the up-n-comers don't judge their talents on this one. But Paul is fast.
As a shameless super-fan of the women’s team, I am ecstatic to bear news of them medaling in the Womens 8+. Cox Amy Sniffen guided Pam Tengdin, Heather Shand, Susan Brighton, Marcie Jacobs, Elizabeth Glenshaw, Elizabeth Jones, Donna Morris-Calvey, and Debbie Hannam. They took the bronze and Narragansett was gold.
The men’s double of Tim Cox and Paul Gross took the bronze in the master’s 2x, with Maine Coast (Tunni and Tots) earning gold. Good show, lads!
Heather Shand and Joe Jones won the super-rower challenge of racing their first-ever singles race 👏👏👏👏
Heather defeated 7 competitors in the masters single 30-59 event, finishing 11th. Mitz Carr, unaffiliated, won and I (Ala) placed second.
Joe bested a couple of guys in his first showing, finishing a decent 8th.
The men’s Master’s 4+ (C-Claire McIntyre, Tyler Bergmeier, Dmitry Kim, Terry Harwood, Sean Whalen) took 5th.
The women’s 8+ (Debbie replaced by Edie Farwell) split into 4+s and raced again into 6th and 8th place in the master’s 4+ event.
Debbie did not race the master’s 4+ because she was busy in the OPEN double with 19-year old Lauren Brock! Despite their 41-year age difference they beat a few crews, passing one, and finished 10th. Kudos and congrats to both❤️!
The men’s master’s quad placed 4th (Tim, Terry, Ben, Joe) with Maine Coast again wearing the gold (Tunni, Tots, Bill and Scott).
For their 3rd race of the day the women’s quad [Debbie, Glenshaw, Edie (*second race), Donna] squeezed the last juice they had for their “fun row,” finishing 14th after being intentionally run into the weeds by a startlingly unsportsmanlike competitor.
Pam Tengdin and her son Dean raced together, which is awesome! There was no child/parent event so they rowed in the open mixed double, passed a crew, and left with memories to share around the thanksgiving table. They finished 7th.
And finally, rowing into the sunset, the mixed masters 8+ closed the racing with Chuck Nagle at the helm in his unseeable purple sparkle trou. Thanks for that gift, Chuck. Susan, Ben, Sean, Tyler, Edie, Marcie, Dmitry, and E.Jones took 4th.
Thanks for a great season UVRF! See everyone at the work party today, yes?
apologies for those who’s pictures I did not get!
