thanks much.

I would suggest that you look into using Pluggable Authentication Modules
(PAM). It is a framework provided by HP and other vendors to allow
alternative authentication mechanisms without actually replacing the login
binary. There are a couple of resources that you might want to look into:
man pam (hpux man pages)
http://www.opengroup.org/tech/rfc/rfc86.0.html (RFC)
http://www.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/Linux-PAM-html/ (Linux docs.
They apply as well to hpux in most respects.)
Good Luck,

It's possible: the programs that handle logins are just programs.
It depends in which part you want to replace with a fingerprint
checker. You need to construct equivalents of one or more of these:
getty(1M)
Asks for login ID on serial ports.
login(1M)
Asks for login ID and password on serial ports.
xdm(1M)
Handles generic X windowing system logins.
dtlogin(1M)
Handles CDE logins.
What they do is generally well documented, though how may not be;
versions from "free UNIXes" are good starting points. There are
probably others, such as for a trusted system.
