Aboutthis course:(From the undergraduate bulletin) Introduction to the theory of linearalgebra with some applications; vectors, vector spaces, bases anddimension, applications to geometry, linear transformations and rank, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, determinants and inner products. May notbe taken for credit in addition to AMS 210.

This course is an introduction to the theory which hasdeveloped around the solution of systems of linear equations. Linearalgebra plays a key role in mathematics and has an enormous amount ofapplications (see for instance this website). Most likely, in your daily life, you use technology that uses linearalgebra.

As in any math course, do not be discouraged if you findyourself struggling with a problem or a concept for hours. You willneed to do computations in order to understanding the material, but donot waste time in mindlessly memorizing techniques.

Examinations and grading: There will be two midtermexams (in class), and a cumulative final exam. The dates are listedbelow. Success on the exams will require correct and efficientsolutions to the more difficult of the homework problems. Part of yourgrade will be based on class participation in the lecture (note thatasking questions in class counts as class participation).

Make sure that you can attend the exams at the scheduledtimes; make-ups will not be given. If one midterm exam ismissed because of a serious (documented) illness or emergency, thesemester grade will be determined based on the balance of the work inthe course.

All exams are closed notes and closed book. It is notpermitted to use cell phones, calculators, laptops, MP3 players,Blackberries or other such electronic devices at any time during exams.Once the exam has begun, use of such devices or having such devices inview, as well as having notes or books on the desk or in view willbe considered cheating and will be referred to the Academic Judiciary.Similarly, once the exam has begun any communication with a personother than the instructor or proctor will be considered cheating andwill be referred to the Academic Judiciary.
