Greetings everyone!
My name is Jessica Dalderis. I am a fourth year undergraduate student
in the Department of Women’s Studies and Social Justice Studies Program
at the University of Victoria. One of the requirements of the Women’s
Studies program is the completion of a graduating project.
A graduating project is a self-directed research project. It involves
creating, developing, and completing a project pertaining to a topic
that is relevant to Women’s Studies and/or feminism and/or social
justice. For my graduating project, I am making a film that explores
and celebrates what people have done, and are doing, to advocate justice
and respect for nonhuman animals. I will document and later analyze
how various advocates, activists, and organizations are mobilizing to
raise awareness about injustice towards nonhuman animals, and working to
develop anti-oppressive frameworks that include the well-being and
interests of nonhuman animals. It is my hope that the film will capture
not only the reasons why we (humans) should care about nonhuman
animals, and that justice for nonhuman animals is a social justice issue
of its own, but also some of the intersections between animal
injustices and other forms of oppression. Upon completion of the film, I
expect to share/screen the film (non-commercially) with students and
faculty at UVic, the greater social justice and animal advocacy
communities, and the online Institute for Critical Animal Studies with
the intention of honouring what people are doing to promote justice for
nonhuman animals (and the people who are doing this work). I will also
write an analytical paper for my professor based on my experience during
the project.
Given your involvement with animal advocacy, and/or affiliation with the
UVic Vegan Association, I would like very much to interview you on
camera and/or film you engaging in (legal) animal advocacy/activism.
The questions I intend to ask (see below) will address your personal
beliefs, values, opinions, and experiences with regards to nonhuman
animals and animal advocacy.
Interview Questions:
- What inspired you to become involved in animal liberation/justice/rights/post-humanism?
- My understanding is that the animal justice movement is comprised
of a plurality of positions. How do you negotiate the plurality of
voices involved in animal activism?
- In the activist work you’ve done (teaching, community, or
otherwise) which area of work did you find most challenging? Most
rewarding?
- Do you think animal (in)justice is a social justice issue of its own?
- Why is it so important to respect and care about animals?
- Do you think animal (in)justice is connected to other areas of social justice? Please explain.
- Do you/how do you think animal justice activists can create more
spaces to critically engage about animal (in)justices here at UVic?
Should Critical Animal Studies be included in our Social Justice Studies
program at UVic?
- Do you have any advice or ‘words of wisdom‘ for fellow/up and
coming activists or people that care about/want to respect animals?
I welcome any input you may have to offer, particularly pertaining to
any issues or concerns you feel I should address, but which are not
reflected in the above questions. I anticipate that your participation
will involve a time commitment of approximately 30 minutes for the
interview, (maximum of 1 hour allotted for interviews) and a maximum of 1
hour at a later date to review the footage of you to be included in the
final film. All levels of contribution will be respected and valued.
The interview and/or filming of animal advocacy (i.e., presentations,
talks, artwork, live music, etc.) will be carried out by me, at your
convenience, and the review of footage segments will be carried out by
you, at your convenience (within a mutually agreed-upon time frame).
If you are interested in participating in this project, or have any
questions, suggestions, or concerns, please contact me via email at
dald...@uvic.ca, or via phone at
250-885-9575. If you know someone else
who might be interested in participating in this film, please feel free
to pass along my contact information, so they can get in touch with
me. I would like to stress that although I am a member of Victoria’s
animal justice/activist community, and that we may therefore share a
social network, you should not feel in any way pressured or obligated to
participate in this study. If you do feel pressured or obligated to
participate, you should decline this offer. Further, declining to
participate, or withdrawing at any time without giving any explanation,
will have absolutely no repercussions. If you do decide to participate,
you will have control over the extent of of your participation. Please
carefully review the attached interview consent form for a more in-depth
discussion on the objectives, methods, potential uses, etc. of this
project before you decide to participate. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Jessica Dalderis (former UVA director)
P.S. Please note that this study/ editing of the film will be ongoing
over the summer, so there will possibly be opportunities to participate
after April. However, I am aiming to have the bulk of my filming
finished by April 8th. Consent form attached below.
