Hi everyone,

After another wonderful pancake-eating frenzy, the UVA is ready for action this semester. We hope that you can join us for more events!

In this newsletter:
   1.  Coming Events: Veganism 101 and Volunteer Orientation
   2.  Recent Events: Free Pancake Brunch!

1) Coming Events

Veganism 101
Most Canadians believe that it is wrong to unnecessarily harm animals. What happens when this principle is applied to our everyday lives? Is the use of animals - for food, clothing, science, or entertainment - necessary? Is less harm, such as 'humane' farming practices, an acceptable choice that falls in line with our ethics? What about vegetarianism?

The UVic Vegan Association presents "Veganism 101: An Introduction to Veganism". This presentation will explore a single basic reason for adopting a vegan lifestyle: the humane treatment principle. This is for everyone, not just non-vegans - new vegans and old vegans alike can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the ethics behind veganism.

Free coffee will be available! Bring your mugs!

Volunteers are needed for posters, chalk board announcements, or even helping with making the coffee. If you are able to help out, please let us know.

Date: Wednesday, September 28, 2011
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Clearihue C111, UVic

Volunteer Orientation
Interested in promoting veganism? Want to help the UVA with its education, support, and rescue efforts? Want to be a director of the UVA? There are many opportunities to be involved, and there is no firm commitment required. All UVA directors volunteer their time as they are able.

In early October, we'll hold a meeting to discuss volunteer opportunities and potential events we can have this semester. All are welcome. We strongly encourage anyone interested in volunteering with the UVA to attend our Veganism 101 presentation (if you haven't in the past) and to read the club's Mission, Vision, and Values Statement:

Here is a Doodle poll to determine the best date and time for everyone:

2) Recent Events

Free Pancake Brunch!
Around 30 people descended upon 930 Selkirk to consume stack upon stacks of yummy pancakes. We thank everyone for joining in on the eating and socializing - this event is a treat for us every semester. In the end, 21 batches of pancakes were made (that's 168 pancakes) - looks like a new record!

That's it for now. We hope to see you soon!
