Hi everyone,
We hope everyone finds themselves full of energy and ready to tackle a new year and a new semester. The UVic Vegan Association certainly is!
In this newsletter:
1. Coming Events: Free Pancake Brunch! and First Meeting for the Introduction to Animal Rights Reading Group
2. Recent Events: UVA Meeting and Vegan Discourse
3. Thought for the Day: A commitment for a new year
1) Coming EventsFree Pancake Brunch!Once again, this Saturday, Jan 22, we're holding another pancake brunch. As usual, we start serving the pancakes at 10 am and keep on slingin' them until we run out of batter or mouths to feed, which ever comes first.
This is open to everyone - bring guests! Please RSVP ASAP if you can - it's very helpful so that we know how much food to buy. You can send an RSVP to
uvaco...@gmail.com or on our Facebook event page:
http://tinyurl.com/5wj2f2lOther than pancakes, there will be beverages. If you'd like coffee or tea, please bring your own mug as ours are very limited.
We will have a collection jar for Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary (where we currently sponsor two residents):
http://tinyurl.com/2a2o34oIt is not required (free pancakes!) but we very much appreciate any donation to help us reach our goal of sponsoring both Justice and Francesca for another year.
Our house is at 930 Selkirk Ave. If you're taking the bus, both the #14 and #26 come by this area. We're close to the Craigflower/Tillicum intersection.
We hope to see you out! And don't forget your mug!
Reading GroupSaturday, Jan 29th is our first meeting for those interested in taking part in our Introduction to Animal Rights reading group. Details for this awesome program will be coming out soon.
2) Recent EventsUVA Meeting and Vegan Discourse:It's always great to get together with vegans, eat some wonderful food, and engage in meaningful discourse. And, with 17 people at our first meeting of the semester, we had a lot of good discussion. We talked about the merits of various forms of activism, with a focus on welfarism and abolitionism. This is a topic that could be discussed at length and we gave it a good go.
Here are some supplemental articles or podcasts that you may find interesting as a follow-up to the discussion:

3) Thought for the Day: A commitment for a new yearIn the time it takes you to read this tiny thought of the day, approximately 100,000 land animals will have been slaughtered for food. Despite what seems to be nearly limitless death and suffering, there is a light. That light is you, and all of the other people in the world who are realizing that the use of non-humans is as unjust as the exploitation or degradation of humans. Every vegan is a beacon of justice and respect who serves as an example for every single person that crosses their path. And there is no shortage of people out there who will understand and appreciate a clear, reasoned argument for adopting veganism. As vegan advocates, we simply need to find those people.
Resolutions at the beginning of a new year are a common practice, but it's never a bad idea to take a moment to assess your life goals and either change them, add to them, or re-affirm your commitment to them. If you aren't vegan, make the commitment to go vegan. The UVA is here to help you in that transition - use us! If you are vegan but new to advocacy, set yourself a reasonable goal - even talking to one person this month about veganism is a good step. You will only get better with practice. And for those long-time advocates out there, analyze your efforts and see where you can improve - sometimes you may recognize where complacency or habit has settled in. Try something new!
Whatever your goals, try to fit in some pancake yumminess this Saturday :o) We hope to see you there!
