General Assembly Edition Just Acts: June 2014:: Witness for Love!

“Justice is what love looks like in public.”

These wise words from Cornel West have been quoted often here in Multicultural Growth & Witness as we prepare for a powerful General Assembly with the theme of “love reaches out” and celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Standing on the Side of Love campaign.

It’s been an inspiring five years, full of people showing up for love and amplifying their voices through the power of love and the presence of yellow shirts. So after five years, what does being on the side of love mean to you in the context of social justice and faith? How do you embody the sort of unconditional love that seeks to bridge divisions, cross borders, and create a world where all beings can not only survive, but thrive?

At General Assembly we will be engaging in questions like these through workshops, worship, and witness. Our time in Providence will include a new kind of public witness event where we will witness for the power of love to create a better world and practice love reaching out. We will be sponsoring WaterFire—a public community arts festival dedicated to transforming downtown Providence—on Saturday evening from 8:15 until 11:30pm. (Join the Facebook event for all the latest updates!)

We will proclaim that love is the greatest justice cause and spiritual imperative there is. That Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Buddha, and Jesus had it right and we follow in their path—unconditional, universal love can unite us all and create Beloved Community.

Regardless of whether or not you’re attending General Assembly, we invite you set some time aside for love this month. Light a fire for love. Engage in conversations and action around what love means to you as a UU and as a change-maker.

If you are coming to General Assembly keep reading to learn about justice-making workshops, organizing meetings, and events you can join.

In faith and love,

Alex, Annette, Audra, Eleanor, Hanna, Janice, Jennifer, Jessica, Lesley, Nora, Susan, and Taquiena
