Sam:
After reflecting about the likeliest ways for young people to actually change the world, rather than just talking, the best advice I could give would be for them to attend the Permaculture classes that Lichen June offers at UUCS, rather than Social Justice in Action meetings.
They're welcome to do both, of course, but I think that there is a lot more important learning opportunity and chances for positive change available for younger folks through systems thinking and permaculture ideas.
The fastest path to change the world is by changing one's self, and this is far easier for young people than for geezers like us. To the extent that young people acquire the systems thinking inherent in permaculture before their social clay hardens around them, the more effective they are likely to be at making progress in terms of being people who act in accord with social justice values throughout their lives.
Here's a good introduction to the permaculture field. Honestly, I think permaculture should be a core idea throughout UU RE ... Maybe Christi and you and Lichen can work out a way to help nurture these budding social justice advocates by teaching them skills for viewing and changing the world through this powerful lens.
