Sam:

After reflecting about the likeliest ways for young people to actually change the world, rather than just talking, the best advice I could give would be for them to attend the Permaculture classes that Lichen June offers at UUCS, rather than Social Justice in Action meetings.

They're welcome to do both, of course, but I think that there is a lot more important learning opportunity and chances for positive change available for younger folks through systems thinking and permaculture ideas.

The fastest path to change the world is by changing one's self, and this is far easier for young people than for geezers like us. To the extent that young people acquire the systems thinking inherent in permaculture before their social clay hardens around them, the more effective they are likely to be at making progress in terms of being people who act in accord with social justice values throughout their lives.

Here's a good introduction to the permaculture field.  Honestly, I think permaculture should be a core idea throughout UU RE ... Maybe Christi and you and Lichen can work out a way to help nurture these budding social justice advocates by teaching them skills for viewing and changing  the world through this powerful lens.

Sounds great Sam - nice to have some young ones join us for our meeting.  New energy.  Thanks, Rick

Good morning!

I have 4 (or possibly 5 or 6) youth who would like to learn, in the words of one of them, "How to change the world."  I was wondering if it would be advantageous for them to start working with the Social Justice in Action Team?  Or if I could impose on one or two of you to help me help them?

We will be attending the Salem Speaks Up event tomorrow, to see what we can learn.  If the youth are so inclined, can we also crash (respectfully) your meeting on the 14th?  :)  We'll help with chairs!

Thank you!
Sam

Hi Folks,

A reminder that our monthly meeting of the Social Justice in Action Team meeting will be this coming Sunday December 14 after the second service - look to begin around 12:30 or so.

Two main items on the agenda are:

1)  update on our "One to One Conversations"  - how are they going?

2)  The Roy Zimmerman Concert on February 14 (what role will Social Justice Play?)

If you have other items for us to discuss please let me know and I'll prepare an agenda.

Last month the meeting space (the minister's office) was barely adequate, so I propose we meet in the front of the sanctuary and circle our chairs.

If someone could help set that up, that would be great.  If you can bring a simple snack to share that would be nice since we're meeting during the lunch hour.

Thanks,
Rick
