THE ROY ZIMMERMAN NEWSLETTER
February, 2013

I WANT A MARRIAGE LIKE THEY HAD IN THE BIBLE

People ask me what’s the secret of my success, and actually nobody asks me that. Nobody. But if they did, I’d say, “Marriage.” Marriage is the secret of my success. I’m so happy to be living, traveling, parenting, writing and sweating the small stuff with the beautiful, visionary Melanie Harby. Valentines Day is coming up. That’s not for the newsletter - that’s just a note to self.

Here’s the latest YouTube offering, a song Melanie and I wrote together:

DANCE LIKE EVERYBODY’S WATCHING

This Valentines Day, I want to encourage you all to dance. Wherever you are. If you’re in the dentist’s chair, dance in the dentist’s chair. Do it in solidarity with people all over the world who’ll be dancing in elevators, supermarkets, boardrooms, and out in the street as part of an event called One Billion Rising to draw attention to and demand an end to violence against women.

One in 3 women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. One billion women will be victims of violence. And here in the US, GOP lawmakers have blocked reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, a major advancement for the Oppressor’s Rights Movement.

Eve Ensler, the playwright of “The Vagina Monogues,” conceived One Billion Rising as a response to these ugly absurdities. So, although I’m a crappy dancer - my moves make Mitt Romney look like, well, Barack Obama - I will be dancing on Valentines Day.

HOUSE CONCERT, ANYONE?

I’m in the Northwest for most of February, and in mid-March, Melanie and I pack everything we own into a rickety Dodge Caravan, and set out across the vast, barren landscape of American popular music. I exaggerate. But we will be driving to Maine and back, with shows all along the way.

In the short term, there are a few open dates at the end of this month and the beginning of March. Do you know of a living room where we can gather 30 or more of your closest friends? Write me at meta4r...@aol.com and let’s do a house concert.

JON FROMER MEMORIAL

I’m sad to say I won’t be able to be there. I’ll be playing in Salem, OR. But if you are in the Bay Area, and you care about the music of Peace and Justice, you will want to celebrate the life of Jon Fromer:

IN ASHLAND, OREGON...

...I asked the couple in the front row, “Are you married?”

She paused and said, “More or less.”

I said, “Which is it tonight? More, or less?”

Looking forward,

Roy
