TONIGHT! Join us for our monthly
ALIVE MIND CINEMA SERIES film, YANGSI! Followed by Q&A with Reverend Marilyn Sewell and Professor Jim Blumenthal!
YANGSI, the next film in our ALIVE MIND CINEMA SERIES, is the charming portrait of a young man recognized as the reincarnation of an important spiritual leader in the Tibetan Buddhist faith... one night only, Monday, August 25th at 7:45pm!Recognized as the reincarnation ('yangsi') of one of the most revered Tibetan Masters of the 20th century, Ugyen Tenzin Jigme Lhundrup must train to perpetuate this legacy, ultimately assuming his full responsibilities at age 18. YANGSI follows this unfolding story over fourteen years, bringing to light with unusual intimacy the experience of being "recognized", both on the part of the young child, and for his family, his teachers, and his future disciples. A narration by the Yangsi himself adds poignant candor to this question, as he gives voice to his doubts and concerns, as well as his determination and conviction.
The August 25th screening of Yangsi will be followed by a discussion led by James Blumenthal, Oregon State University Associate Professor of Indian and Tibetan Intellectual History and Buddhist Philosophy and Marilyn Sewell, Unitarian Universalist minister, writer, speaker and activist!
Jim Blumenthal has been on the faculty at Oregon State University since completing his Ph.D. in 1999. His research is in the history of Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Blumenthal's primary areas of interest are in Indian and Tibetan intellectual history, Buddhist hermeneutics, Mahayana Buddhist philosophy, theories of non-violence, and religious based social justice movements. Jim has spent nearly three years in Asia, primarily living in Tibetan refugee communities in India and Nepal. After his B.A. and before returning to grad school, Blumenthal worked for the international environmental group, Greenpeace, for four years and was active with several other organizations workingfor peace and social justice. This work
led to several arrests for participation in non-violent acts of civil disobedience. He remains committed to issues of peace and justice.
The Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell, an accomplished Unitarian Universalist minister, is known for her dynamic speaking, writing, teaching, and her justice work. She is also an Adjunct Fellow at the Attic Institute, a literary think tank and visual arts studio in Portland, Oregon that is a haven for writers and artists. Her life journey itself has been an amazing one and is beautifully rendered in the new award-winning documentary film, Raw Faith which will play as part of our ALIVE MIND CINEMA SERIES in October.

VAGABOND BREWING AND SALEM CINEMA present a FREE EVENING OF INDEPENDENT SHORT FILMS, including GAGE, a short film about Phineas Gage whose famous case in 1848 has changed our understanding of the human brain forever...one night only, Tuesday, August 26th at 7:45PM followed by Q&A with the director, cast and crew!
Phineas Gage was an American railroad worker in Cavendish, Vermont in 1848, who suffered severe brain trauma when an iron-tampering rod ripped through his cheek and came out the top of his skull. Phineas survived the trauma but developed a profound shift in his personality. He changed from being a mild mannered gentleman into a vulgar and uncivil outcast. The film follows the events surrounding the trauma Phineas suffered, which was perhaps the first case that demonstrated the important role that the frontal cortex plays in determining personality. Many of our current war veterans deal with similar issues as Phineas, and the story remains relevant to audiences across the globe.
The United States Veterans Artists Allianceis one of the supporters of the project as the director Keith Wilhelm Kopp is a U.S. Army Vet himself. Several other cast members are also veterans and excited to tell this compelling story.
Director, Keith Wilhelm Kopp chose Oregon as the main location for shooting because of its natural beauty and relevance to the period. Shooting took place in Shaniko and Newbarg, Oregon. His hope is to engage audiences in conversations about mental health and what role brain damage plays in personality shifts.
