As Oregon’s Chief Justice, Thomas Balmer oversees the court system where the problems of income inequality, poverty, homelessness, and addiction play out every day. This lecture presents a rare
opportunity for the community to hear Balmer spell out a judge’s-eye view of these issues as well as his view of the obligations of individuals and institutions to fashion new ways to bring about a more just and fair society.
Justice Balmer holds a unique position of perspective in our state, one that allows him to see and hear every day the realities that plague our society. “Thomas Jefferson’s famous remark, ‘I tremble
for my country when I reflect that God is just...’ Balmer said recently, “was sparked by Jefferson’s understanding that the moral evil of slavery eventually would convulse the country. But a contemporary Jefferson would no doubt tremble when reflecting on
some aspects of American society today: income inequality and poverty, homelessness and addiction, broken families and untreated mental illness, for example.”
Tickets are $10.00 for General Admission and $25.00 for Admission together with a Reception immediately following the lecture. Space is limited. Early reservations are strongly recommended.
