Unitarian Universalists believe in the inherent worth and dignity of each person, including in the dying process. On April 9, the Illinois End-of-Life Options Act (SB 9) passed out of committee in the
Senate.
This legislation would allow a mentally capable, terminally ill adult with a prognosis of six months or less the option to obtain a prescription medication they may decide to take so they can die peacefully
and end their suffering.
Polling shows that 71% of Illinois voters support medical aid in dying as do 68% of physicians.
Medical aid in dying is authorized in 10 states. In the 27 years since the first medical aid-in-dying law went into effect in 1997 in Oregon, there have been no substantiated cases of abuse or coercion.
Please ask your state legislators to support this bill. And if you can edit the first paragraph to add your own concerns about what you or your friends might face, it will make it
much more powerful.
