In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in the Discipline of Computer Science, Austin Roberts will defend his thesis Mitigating Automated Patch-based Exploit Generation with Encrypted Update Distribution.

Abstract:

Current patch distribution mechanisms are dependent on the presumption that releasing an update can fix a vulnerability without providing specific details about how the vulnerability could be exploited. However tools which use patches to generate exploits with little or no user interaction are beginning to show that some of the assumptions used in current update distribution systems need to be revisited. This thesis proposes a new update system architecture which uses encryption to help maximize the number of clients capable of applying an update the moment it is released. This architecture is demonstrated by a sample implementation and test deployment, and modeled using stochastic pi calculus.
