Petronius Is the World's Largest Free-Standing Structure
If there is any doubt we live in an oil-based economy, consider
this:
Chevron, the second-largest American oil company, spends $40
million a day just looking for the stuff in the Gulf of Mexico,
130 miles southeast of New Orleans.
Chevron has spent half a billion dollars building Petronius, the
world's largest oil platform, which manages 14 oil wells.
Petronius is the largest free-standing structure in the world at
2,001 feet tall, with most of it underwater.
The first thing you notice when arriving on Petronius is the
deafening noise. From the rotors of the chopper to the roar of
the diesel generators to the hammering to the driving and
pounding of metal on metal, it is a constant assault on your
eardrums.
Everyone is required to wear earplugs virtually everywhere on
the platform. It's just one part of the safety gear: Hard hats,
eye protection and steel-toed boots are also mandatory.
It is a dangerous place. Just looking through the grates is a
constant reminder that there's just a few inches of steel
between you and the Gulf. There are cranes that constantly swing
pipes across the deck to supply the drilling rig; the power
tools on the drilling floor can sever limbs in an instant.
Almost everything on Petronius is combustible.

While he spent more than 30 years in law-enforcement, Lucas has
also dabbled in such madman roles as rodeo clown and movie
stuntman. Today, he is helping devise Texas' homeland security
plans.

Ex-governor's son found slain in Texas
ATHENS, Texas - A body found buried on a ranch near Athens was
identified as the missing son of former Texas governor Bill
Clements, a sheriff said yesterday.
Gill Clements, 69, was apparently shot to death, although no
official cause of death has been released, Henderson County
Sheriff Ray Nutt said.
Nutt said officials suspect the likely killer was the property
owner, Howard T. Granger, 46, who neighbors say used an assault
rifle to guard his property. Authorities shot and killed Granger
on Friday when he opened fire on sheriff's deputies who were
looking for Clements.
Clements's body was found Saturday, buried behind a house on
Granger's ranch.
Officials didn't identify a possible motive, but Nutt said
Clements once spoke with Granger about Granger shooting across a
fence at a tree on Clements's property.
"Mr. Clements did have some type of conversation with him about
that. I don't know of what nature,'' Nutt said.
It was just one of those crazy things,'' Gill Clements's
stepmother, Rita Clements, told The Dallas Morning News. "You
can't believe in today's world that it happens, but it does.''
Neighbor John Wiggins told the Tyler Morning Telegraph that
Granger was a "nut" and known for keeping to himself.
Once when building a fence, he had an AK-47 assault rifle with
him leaning on a post as he moved down the line, Wiggins said.
Republican Bill Clements, 93, took office in 1979 and served two
terms
Gill Clements was president of Southeastern Drilling Co., later
known as Sedco, the oil-drilling company founded by his father
in 1947 and later sold for $1 billion to Schlumberger Ltd.
Gill Clements visited his Henderson County ranch often and in
recent years extended his property, neighbors said. Athens is 60
miles southeast of Dallas.

LuAnne Clements' dog, Sweetie, was attacked Thursday afternoon
while her husband was walking their pets in the woods
Sweetie ran ahead and apparently right into a coyote big enough
to pick the dog up in its mouth.
LuAnne's husband managed to scare the coyote away and rush
Sweetie to the vet.
So what can you do about coyotes? State law says if you're on
private land, it's open season year round. There are limits on
the type of weapon you can use. For instance, you can't use a

I wish he had cracked the jerk's skull and left him unconscious.
By Clements's own testimony he threatened Funches with a gun for
refusing to discuss the dog messes with him. Someone threatens
me with a gun that way and if I get the drop on him he's going
to get kicked six ways from Sunday and then he just might need
that gun.
By Clements's own testimony Funches had the right to beat the
crap out of him or kill him. Clements showed him the gun to
threaten and attempt to intimidate him. It's too bad Funches
didn't know more about defending himself against an assailant
who was holding a gun. Funches had the right to defend himself.
Maybe he already had nothing to lose by the time Clements showed
him the gun.
I'm still for the right to own guns. For every person who does
what Clements did there must be thousands who legitimately
needed to shoot a burglar.

Gov. Bill Clements Tuesday criticized reporters for
concentrating on Texas links to various assassination attempts,
including the attempt on President Reagan, saying if newspeople
continued to link the state to would-be killers the state's
reputation would be seriously damaged. Clements talked with
reporters briefly after addressing the Southwest Cattle Raisers
Association Convention. Although the governor lives in Highland
Park and is involved in the oil business, he said he did not
know the family of accused assassin John W. Hinckley Jr., 25,
previously of Highland Park, whose father is president of
Vanderbilt Energy Corp. of Denver. Clements said he felt ''
horrible'' when he heard Hinckley was from Texas, the same state
in which Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John Kennedy
in 1963 and where Mark Chapman, killer of former Beatle John
Lennon, was born.
Clements was with Vice President George Bush on Bush's aircraft
in Austin a short time after the assassination attempt on Reagan,
but would not characterize Bush's mood at the time.

British Petroleum is, rightfully, taking a lot of grief for the
massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but we should save some
of our vituperation for Transocean Ltd., the company that leased
the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon drilling rig to BP. Transocean
is no innocent bystander in this matter. It presumably has some
responsibility for the safety condition of the rig, which its
employees helped operate (nine of them died in the April 20
explosion).
Transocean also brings some bad karma to the situation. The
company, the world's largest offshore drilling contractor, is
the result of a long series of corporate mergers and
acquisitions dating back decades. One of the firms that went
into that mix was Sedco, which was founded in 1947 as
Southeastern Drilling Company by Bill Clements, who would
decades later become a conservative Republican governor of Texas.

The energy industry's close-knit relations with government
remained basically secure under his successors. Crude
industrialists may have been patronized or snubbed in the social
whirl of Camelot. But their legal and banking spokesmen
encountered few problems of access. The policies of John F.

dumping his running mate in the 1952 campaign, had speculated
about replacing him as a second-term vice-president with oilman
Robert B. Anderson, who was also close to Lyndon Johnson.

More disturbing was the nomination in 1972 of William P.
Clements, Jr., as deputy secretary of defense. Clements had
headed the largest overseas drilling company and along with his
business associates was a Nixon campaign contributor in the
April 1972 charade to beat the disclosure deadline. At the time
of his appointment, Clements was a defendant in a civil suit
which charged that he and his company had cheated an Argentine
businessman on commissions for oil drilling contracts, had
bribed high officials of the Argentine government, and then had
destroyed many of the records. A legislative investigation in
Argentina found "profound immorality and corruption." All these
charges were denied by Clements. According to the White House,
there was nothing in the case that "in any way disqualified Mr.
Clements from assuming the position." He was confirmed without
any requirement that he divest himself of his more than $100
million stock in the Southwest Drilling Company (SEDCO).
Clements was then appointed as Pentagon representative to the
President's Emergency Energy Action Group

power plants emit no carbon into the atmosphere, unlike coal-

"The world is going nuclear," said Gay, chief operating officer.
"The Chinese are building (nuclear) plants. The French are going

into fuel." That's good news for Brooks, because all power
