The editors of the Daze appear to have been unaware of Galbraith's First Law, emblazoned in needlepoint on a pillow at my parents' house:

"Modesty is a vastly overrated virtue."

***

<There is another needlepoint pillow somewhere in the same house, done by some admirer: "All the money in the world cannot buy a friend." And underneath, in permanent magic marker: "*but bid anyway.">

****

<All of which reminds me of a needlepoint pillow I once saw on the couch of Alice Roosevelt Longworth (daughter of TR), back in the early 70s: "If you haven't anything nice to say about anyone, then come sit by me.">

The Stranger is reminded of a quote he saw from your father in Vanity
Fair last year, to to the effect that his greatest flaw was a tendency
toward high self-regard. We're happy to give credit where it is due,
surely you don't think household crafts could muffle the blarring trumpets

Be it known that there was some internal dissent concerning the self-
aggrandizement that YOU refferenced.
