Question about life.at(r,c)

Is this function only supposed to be used for updating the life object? Is
this method ever going to be used like: x..at(1,1) = false; or only
x.at(1,1) = true; only? The only reason I'm asking is that I'm finding it
hard to update the population by just using the .at() call.

Any assignment to at() should be okay, including another cell object.
