I start all my knowledge Organizers (KOs) in Excel/Googel Sheets. I do this because I use a brilliant tool created by Adam Boxer, Retrieval Roulette (Click on the link to see how to use Retrieval Roulettes, click on this one to see completed Retrieval Roulettes). I start by inputting the terms from an entire chapter of my science textbook.

Next, I highlight the terms and definitions and copy them into a Word document. My KO is started. (In this example, I have already added concept questions to this Excel sheet, so the vocabulary words are spread out. To split them, I just insert a row below the last definition for the lesson.)

The next step is to add key concept questions. I begin this in the Excel Retrieval Roulette file as well. As mentioned above, I insert the questions under the last vocabulary word for that lesson. To do so, I add a row and click the repeat button to add rows as necessary.I repeat this step for each of the lessons in the chapter. Next, I select the questions that I think are most important for my students to grasp and I insert those into the KO using the same method as above.

After I make a KO for the chapter, I then create a flashcard set. Again, this relies on the Excel program and, as a bonus is incredibly simple. I simply highlight everything for that chapter and import it into Quizlet.

The last thing I want to mention is that this process has greatly reduced my prep time (Once I figured out how to use the various programs/systems). I basically have my tests prewritten in the excel file and just need to reformat them when I create a test. I can also easily use the excel file to AUTOMATICALLY generate quizzes (seriously check out the retrieval roulette links at the beginning of the article, they are an absolute gold mine!)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

Although developers are generally tech-savvy, many often prefer physical note-taking systems like notebooks or index cards because they are simply more effective for increasing knowledge, retention and learning.

Speaking from my own experience, using index cards to learn to code is not a good idea unless you have a system that allows you to quickly get the information faster that it would take you to look it up online.

Also, by actually using the notes you take, you are strengthening the neural pathways in your brain. A lot of people take notes and then never look at them again, which is a far less effective learning strategy.

This type of index card holder is something we invented because we wanted a simple, hands-free way of accessing the information on our own index cards quickly, without having to manually sort through them.

Plastic index card cases are excellent for transporting and carrying small amounts of index cards around with you. You typically see students carrying these around in their school bag in a classroom setting.

Accordion file organizers can be used to store index cards and many other types of items. They are great when you need to carry a variety of objects and you need to compartmentalize each into its own slot.

In the niche corners of the internet, there exist 35-inch and 46-inch index card binder page inserts. The concept here is to use a regular binder or an over-sized scrapbooking binder to hold these polypropylene page plastic inserts.

Clear acrylic card file boxes are a bit fancier and more presentable than your standard plastic index card box. These types of index card holders are good when you want a presentable and functional storage solution.
